I was thinking about picking up a copy of Taschen's Some Like It Hot book, and I was wondering if anyone out there has it, and if so, what they think of it.
Marloes
I don't have it, but I think it's great book. I've read about it at the Taschen website and I think it's cool to have for Marilyn fans. Only it's quite expensive:

List Prices:
USD 200.00 | GBP 100.00 | EUR 150.00 | JPY 25000.00

What have inside the book?
Mandydolphin
I own the book.It cost me a lot of money but it's worth it.Inside the book(inside the back cover) it a copy of Marilyn's promptbook including her notes. It looks so real that you start to wonder if it's a copy or the real thing. If you have the money you should consider buying it.

Can you give me some more information about the book? Does it unclude pictures and details about the making of the movie?

I had never heard of it until now.
riemedial
Thanks everyone for your replies. I ended up buying the book today because I found it at a really good price. The book is beautiful! It contains exerts from the 1st draft of the script and the complete facsimile of the finale script with screen shots from every scene in the movie. The book has got to be almost 2 and a half inches thick! It is just huge. It also contains newly conducted interviews with Billy Wilder, Jack Lemmon (his last before he passed on I believe) and Tony Curtis. There is also a scrapbook section that has behind the scene photos, international movie posters, and all kinds of other cool stuff. Oh!...the cover is also made of this cool kind of yellow padded Swede, and in the back is a complete facsimile of Monroe's prompt book used during the shoot, annotations and all!

Although it was a pretty penny, it really was worth it. If anyone else is interested in this book you can get it at a great price on amazon.com ($95) as a posed to buying it directly from Taschen for $200. Thanks again to everyone who replied.
Marloes
Wow, now I want it too. But I don't have any money for it, because I am ordering 'An Evening With Marilyn' and 'Marilyn Among Friends'.
But maybe in couple of months biggrin.gif

I've been wanting that book since it came out, but it's way too expensive for me. It seems wonderful smile1.gif
Mandydolphin
It is and even though it's expensive,it's worth the money.
riemedial
I absolutely agree with ya on that, Mandydolphin. If you can spare the money you wont regret it.

I haven't seen this book available for such a long time, but now Amazon had ONE in stock - so I had to order it. I still can't believe it!

Alanma
This is a wonderful book. It made the bankmanager squeal a bit, but well worth it.
If you get a secondhand copy, make certain sure that the Prompt book is with it.
Right now there are copies on Abebooks, but all over 100.

Taschen brought out a cheaper version of this a couple of years ago and I bought it. All that was missing was the presentation box, the promptbook was included. It only cost 25 but that edition seems to be out of print now. I don't look at it that often but it is a visual treat, and the script is a cool thing to have. There were interviews with lots of key people involved in the production - Wilder, Curtis etc. It made me sad that Marilyn wasn't there to give her own opinions, because they all had plenty of opinions on her... rolleyes1.gif
Paju
I tried to search for the cheaper version too, but that seems to be unavailable now. At the time they brought it out, I couldn't buy it. I really look forward to it, especially the promptbook, and like you said Tara the book seems to be a real visual treat.
Paju
Looks like I won't be getting the book after all... Amazon sent me an email saying they won't be able to get the book and my order has been canceled. What I don't get is that why they would say they have one in stock and then tell me they're unable to get it?
Tiina
It sucks Sirkku! angry.gif

I just looked at Amazon now, 19.30, 27 July, Sirkku, and they have 4 in stock.
Mind you the cheapest is 225.
I think I will keep mine at the Bank.
Nancy
Too bad they're so expensive. I saw photos of some of the book, and it looks awesome!

I think I'll do the same. That's too expensive for me. The one I ordered cost 150 dollars, which in euros is less, and even though it's a lot of money, it's the cheapest price for the book I've ever seen. Too bad they changed their mind about it being in stock.
Alanma
I got mine a couple of years ago from a bookseller who normally specialises in technical Engineering books.
Occasionally he 'salts' his list with out-of-the-way gems like the Taschen book.
I paid about 75 for it, I think.
No, he hasn't any left in stock, but I have told him there is a queue of eager customers if his price is right, and he does do overseas deliveries.
Will keep checking.
Alanma
For those of you who may not have seen it, here are some pictures of Marilyn's cue-book.

I couldn't get it to photograph clearly, but inside the back cover, in Marilyn's somewhat idiosyncratic handwriting is a nice little thought -
'Acting is being private in public'.
There are a lot of remarks in the script written in a nice neat handwritng which I think belongs to Strasberg.
Bobby
Thanks so much for sharing those photos with us Alan! This may or may not be a stupid question but is that book a personal possession of yours?
Alanma
Yes it is mine, but it is not, not, the original! I'm not that rich!
It is the perfect reproduction that comes with the Taschen book.
Even smudgey fingerprints are there.

My bookseller friend is contact with Taschen, and will let me know immediately if there is any news.
Bobby
Ah right, I see. What a wonderful thing to have. Thanks for clearing that up thumbup1.gif

I have an extra copy of this book for sale if anyone's interested. It does have a little discolouration on the front of the box though. And shipping wouldn't be cheap. Just pm me if interested, I can send you a photo coolio.gif .

Paju
Amazon.com had an affordable one on Marketplace, so I ordered it! It's supposed to be completely new. Yay! biggrin.gif
princesshapnick
Wonderful, Sirkku! How much for? I think I might go looking right now...
Paju
It was about 131 dollars (which of course in euros is less). The rest of the sellers had it for like 249 dollars or more. Hopefully this time I'll really get the book.
princesshapnick
Well, that's not too bad. Most sites sell it for around $300, and that is a LOT of money. My cousin was so shocked. She loves the movie as much as I do but she said she wouldn't pay that much for a book. Knowing me though, if I had the money, I wouldn't care - I'll get it anyway! But my parents have said they will help me with it if I find a (much) cheaper price for it.
Paju
I know, these days the prices usually go over the top (not that the book was ever cheap), so I think the 131 dollars plus shipping is a good deal. But it seems like a fantastic book, so I believe it will be worth the price I paid for it.
Mezzo
I bought mine on ebay about a year ago, and paid around $100. It doesn't have the box, but it is really wonderful to look through her prompt book to gain some insight to her thoughts about her role. I also enjoy seeing her handwriting.
Paju
It arrived today! I'm so excited biggrin.gif It was even delivered to our door, which isn't a standard here with big packages. It is simply gorgeous.
Will write more when I've read the whole book smile1.gif

Congrats, Sirkku! Can't wait for your review! biggrin.gif

WOO HOO! I am very happy. I've managed to buy this book!! I've been doing really well at work recently (pay rise an' all!) so I thought I'd treat myself and buy it finally. And I found someone was selling their copy on eBay with a starting price of 100 (which is pretty brilliant compared to most offers I've seen are like 300) and I really thought I wouldn't get it because I've tried bidding against other people before and I'm not good at it because I always forget at the last second or something! But I don't think there was anyone else bidding on it. I put on 110 to be on the safe side on the last 5 seconds as my first bid but because I won it, I got it for the starting price. It's 4.50 for postage and packaging too, but that's very reasonable because of the size of the book! I've heard it is very heavy. This is so exciting! It's in London and that's not very far away from me so it shouldn't take too long hopefully. thumbup1.gif

To Lorraine: You were right! I would get it in the end for a good price! biggrin.gif
Tara
That's fantastic Becky! And I know you're going to love it. jumpymm.gif

I can barely contain myself! The seller says it should be here in 2-3 days. thumbup1.gif
I just know I'm going to be so unbearable for my family once it arrives!! clapping.gif

Aaaaaaa! It came today!! I got in from work, wasn't really thinking about it to be honest (it was a very brief moment!) and I sat down thinking: "These cushions are really uncomfortable". I thought someone had been sitting weirdly there and my dad had hidden it there! Bless him, he had no idea what I had bought! My sister couldn't believe her eyes at how heavy it is! Just having a quick flick through as I type now and it's a beautiful book, so so heavy, and I love the little compartment where Marilyn's promptbook is! So cute! I can't wait to get reading it! thumbup1.gif

That's the one thing I couldn't get over is the sheer size of the book! It's nicely stored in my wardrobe right now and I don't get it out that often purely for the fact that it breaks my back! hehe.

I think my fave section is the 'scrapbook' full of gorgeous photos and advertisements for the film (the best being a photo of Daphne and a caption that says, "for a good time call...!" excellent!)

xx

A further reissue is set for August...
