I wonder why it cost so much? I've never paid that much for a book.
Tara
Perhaps it's a large-scale book like the De Dienes boxset that Taschen did?
Stacy
Good luck selling that in this economy.

laugh.gif From the info so far, I'm not tempted - enough Stern/Mailer/Taschen sets already, good as they are!
Paju
I hope the price is a mistake. They would sell a lot more copies if the price was reasonable.

...37cmx44cm. Quite big !

I do not like the Mailer book as a bio, although the style is powerful.
Many pages have been found lacking of true (the Montand chapter among others...).
He regularly switches from adoration to contempt, and tries to make her kind of his creature.

Sometimes brilliant, but never very honest.

Yes, indeed.

Too bad about the price, the way the economy is I can't even afford to buy anything new. I am still upset that the DeDeinnes book costs so much. Its not like its printed with 24k gold leaf around the edges. I love Marilyn a great deal but I just wish I could find the DeDeines book for alot less. As most of you know, I love the '40's MM' look as oppossed to the late 50's or 60's Marilyn. Maybe I just like prefer her hair long and brunette/blonde?

Anyway, thats my two cents... take care my friends, love yas! smile1.gif

Kevin, would you consider buying a used copy? This one for example has the same content as the recent De Dienes book, just in a slightly different format, and is fairly affordable. It's always worth checking the seller's item description and feedback rating, but I have found a lot of MM books this way, and in decent condition.

I´ve learned that after a while those expensive limited edition books sold for a much lower price. I got the De Dienes Box Set for 100 Euros in a Tachen book shop in Koeln, Germany.

I like it! Great choice of photo. biggrin.gif
Tara
I wonder if they'll bring out a smaller, cheaper version later, as with De Dienes? I notice it says 'collector's edition', suggests there may be another yet to come. Well, here's hoping as I certainly can't afford this one!

I agree with Tara and Bruno. Besides, it looks like the same images we all have now. And we have them in HQ as well. Especially for those who already have the Stern huge book, (I wish I did). I don't think I would be interested in all the reading simple because they both exploited her in the past. bye1.gif

Your welcome Eric. I love the pics they used my favorites from Stern. Looks like a great book.

It's beautiful. Still can't afford it though!
Paju
It looks very beautiful. But since I already have Stern's big MM book and don't care much for Mailer's way of writing about MM, I don't feel so bad about passing this one.
nicky62
Thank you Lene great link but $2,500 thats a lot to save although it includes a signed portrait and its limited to 125 books still quite expensive . nicky62
hollywoodcinderella
holy crap...! i was thinking ok its gonna be 250-300 but 800!!!! wow! the pages look beautiful and if the price ever drops I would love to get a copy!
Maneki Neko
Wow, this book sure is expensive! ohmy.gif

I'm not crazy about Norman Mailer's book, and Bert Stern's pictures of Marilyn are not among my favourite pictures of her, so this book really isn't on top of my wish list.

I would still like to have it though. Does anyone know if the one that it sold on Amazon is signed?

As we suspected, the vultures are gathering to exploit the 50th anniversary of Marilyn's death.

Quote from today's 'Daily Mail'.

"The 50th anniversary next year of Marilyn Monroe's death will be marked by a limited-edition coffee-table book combining Norman Mailer's blockbusting conroversial 1973 biography of the actress - saying she was murdered in an FBI-CIA conspiracy - with sexy photographs taken by Bert Stern for Vogue, six weeks before she died.
Price - a trifling $1,000 or £626"

The title and publisher are not stated.

We have already talked about this book.

Thank you, Cyril !

I had missed that completely. Must be getting old!

Many pics from that session are only available in small sizes, so why didn´t they had taken the opportunity to print some of them in full size??? Instead we get the same shots in full size that we already have. Really strange!

I shot several pictures of this big and expensive book collector!

Interesting review from BookForum on the Book.

http://www.bookforum.com/inprint/1804/8595

I had been out of the loop and hadn't really heard of this beast of a book. It flipped through it at a gallery, looked at the price tag, and was surprised I hadn't been requested to put gloves on before touching it.

YESTERDAY I SAW THE BOOK LIVE,
What a disappointment!
THE COLORS ARE HORRIBLE, BAD, FLUORESCENT, MARILYN APPEARS TO TANNING!
The horror!
Half of the PHOTOGRAPHS are reversed (Mirror)

The book to which I refer is Norman Mailer / Bert Stern Marilyn Monroe TASCHEN.
A library in Rome very kindly allowed me to see him.
I repeat the photos were too retouched and Marilyn looks like a clown.
How little respect for a woman who has built with so much suffering and hardship in his image.
Marilyn in this book is brown, with black eyebrows.
What a pain for me to see this book. I hoped very Taschen and instead of disappointment.....
The photos in the book by Taschen are like that I put in the Annex.

Thanks for the info Eric. Don't think I'll buy this one, but it's good to know that Taschen are still open to publishing affordable books!

I have had a phone call with Taschen-Publishers about the book - Marilyn and Me.

They plan to publish the 750 € book for the same price as the Norman Mailer ones 49.00 €/$, but both of them are smaller.

Every fan can buy this edition and have NOT to buy the book for the horror price of 750.00 €/$.

I think that's good news for ALL fans.

Best

Joe

Excellent news. Did they say when it would be at all? X

They didn't tell me a date.

No, but I would say the same time as they publisched the Norman Mialer book.

In a half or year later after first publishing of the Deluxe edition.

Why is the luxury edition so expensive ? That's a gargantuan price for a book surrender.gif

Sorry, that's not high resolution but I'm fed up of robbers and thieves of images that will then sell them on Ebay...
