• Marilyn Monroe: Metamorphosis features images by world-class photographers including Richard Avedon, Milton Greene, Sam Shaw, Cecil Beaton, Philippe Halsman, Andre de Dienes, George Barris, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Philippe Halsman, Willy Rizzo, Richard C. Miller, Tom Kelley, and others.

• More than 60% of the photographs in the book have never before been published.

• Wills’ outstanding collection of rare photographs includes scores of stunningly crisp, full-color images from Monroe’s early years as a catalog model. These breathtaking shots capture the fresh-faced, innocent brunette Norma Jean Baker in her late teens and early twenties—and offer a startling contrast to the iconic image of Marilyn Monroe as a blond bombshell Hollywood starlet.

• Wills has access to the highest-quality images of Marilyn available anywhere in the world—from candids to film stills to modeling head shots, the images in Marilyn Metamorphosis wills stun casual fans and collectors alike. The interior design—by Stephen Schmidt, the designer of our amazing Photo by Sammy Davis Jr.—is elegant and rich, with rich color, spot varnish, and an elegant metallic gold color offsetting Marilyn’s image like the setting for a gem.

• Marilyn Monroe is unparalleled as an iconic photographic subject. Her influence on fashion and popular culture is enduring—young actresses and models continue to pose in homage to her famous “last sitting,” and the image of her iconic white dress billowing over a subway grate has become a cultural touchstone. Marilyn’s visual legacy is seen everywhere. She is beloved by fans internationally.

• Norma Jean Baker’s transformation into one of the most emulated and iconic Hollywood starlets is an epic American story—one that careens from a troubled childhood through bright spotlights and dark depression. Marilyn Metamorphosis offers a straightforward, cleanly designed photograph journey through Monroe’s meteoric rise and tragic undoing. From “The Rehearsal” years of a brunette Norma Jean posing in factories and on beaches, to the final chapter, “Icaras,” which contains images taken only weeks before her death, Marilyn Metamorphosis presents a visual historical record like never before seen.

There have been many Marilyn photo books-but nothing like this.

Australian-born curator and preservationist David Wills has accrued one of the world's largest independent archives of original Marilyn Monroe photographs. Now, in Marilyn Metamorphosis, he has gathered the work of every major Marilyn photographer-and dozens of unknowns-to create the most dazzling portfolio of images from every period in Marilyn Monroe's life, from her earliest sittings in 1942 till just weeks before her death two decades later. With more than three hundred full-bleed photos-including countless dazzling, unseen color photos from the very start of her career-Marilyn Metamorphosis chronicles her meteoric rise from a humble catalog model to one of the most recognized faces in history. No other book even comes close. banana.gif

Thanks for info and the pictures Nicky - Allthough I must say that I've seen them all, the only one I hadn't personally seen before is the one of Andre deDienes with Marilyn lying blonde hair open and eyes closed, it's wonderful - I think the book in itself is certainly a high-quality book, special pictures put together.

I agree, so far the images don't seem rare to me - but just to have so many great photos in one book could be very special. Sort of like an updated MM and the Camera.

I agree with the others. clapping.gif
I love pics 3, 4, 5 and 7 the best! The pixel quality is amazing. So sharp and beautiful...Thanks so much for posting them and giving us information. Also I am building up my MM collection, including books, calendars, magazines, posters, movies, audio clips, individual photos and even wine. Of course lets face it, some of this stuff is priced outrageously and I hope I can sell all 5 of my novels so maybe someday I can afford to buy more stuff, regardless of price (well, I am not someone who will just buy anything because Marilyn is associated with it, I am very persnickity about that) but for now I can buy only certain things because of my budget. coolio.gif

Anyway, since this book does look amazing, I have already added this book to my Wishlist at Amazon.com! Hopefully I can buy it soon, before Christmas. Oh and what other pics are on these pages, Nicky?

Anymore? thumbup1.gif

From a review by Fraser on Immortal Marilyn...

QUOTE
In Metamorphosis, David Wills has brought us arguably the greatest collection of Marilyn photos to date from as early as 1942. He has worked tirelessly sourcing transparencies and contact sheets to bring together a history of Marilyn's life from the early 1940's to 1962. What is striking about the book is the quality of the prints as they've been processed using the most up to date technology giving them a sense of freshness and crisp newness with vibrant colors and life like clarity. David had access to 100s of files and found that the best of the images were the ones already chosen to be released at the time when they were first published and he felt that it was important to use these classic images that are now in some ways iconic, as they show Marilyn at her best. He felt it unnecessary to include shots that had been considered "out-takes," or that were slightly inferior. With this in mind he also thought about younger readers who don't have big collections of photos and are just discovering Marilyn with this book, which I would say easily replaces those published up until now and that are now out of print and hard to find. But there are some 'new' photos which have never been published in books before, so there's something for the die-hard fan to enjoy who has everything.

Wonderful scans Eric. I just received my copy. I would definitely recommend Metamorphosis as a definitive photo book. Not a lot of rare pics IMO, but the quality is incredible. The text is secondary, but it includes an author's introduction, quotes about Marilyn and the Meryman interview.

I just got mine today - its a stunning photo book. very high quality pics. a nice pick me up after a crappy day at work smile1.gif

Fan review on Amazon:

'The Definitive Visual Biography'
Paju
I saw this book in the bookstore (both English and Swedish version - apparently there won't be a Finnish version, at least not in the near future) and it is GORGEOUS. There's no other word. It's a big book, and the quality of the photos is stunning. It's a good visual companion to anyone who's interested in Marilyn or even only her looks. I definitely want this one - I've been hinting, so maybe Santa will bring it to me santa.gif

I ordered this book as a Christmas present for myself, hehe. What a surprise when I got it! The photos are of stunning quality, and there are quite a few rare ones in it aswell. I love the cover photograph by Avedon, rarely used but absolutely beautiful.

May I enquire if you ordered from the Book Depository - did they actually have it in stock? I too have been waiting for it to become available at Amazon UK but the availability keeps changing! I looked on comparison sites and some are saying not published (in UK) til Feb??
It's frustrating as I have been looking forward to this one for ages and can't wait to see it.
Many thanks (1st post but long time lurker!).

I bought it from the Book Depository in November. I always find them pretty reliable and much better than Amazon at accessing hard-to-find books.
