Indeed, very rare. I have never seen it before. Thanks.

It's also surprising that it was selected for publicity, since there is not very much Marilyn Monroe glamour to it. This would also explain why it's so rare - very few have found it particularly striking...

I must say, even though I adore the tigress scene in SYI, I've always thought the hairstyle was hideous. No wonder Marilyn never wore it again!

These are fascinating. The line between the drawings and photographs seem incredibly blurred. Are these mostly collages between photos and drawings? or realistic drawings from photographs? its hard to tell. I am also curious about the story line for these comic books.

I'm insanely jealous!

Sometimes having to admit that you were wrong is difficult. However, sometimes, if you are able to put personal prestige aside, it may even give you pleasure to admit that you've been wrong.

This is such an occasion.

Elsewhere, here on ES, I don't remember where, there was a discussion about the picture I am now posting.
There was a small version of this picture posted and someone, I believe it was Megan, said it was a picture of Marilyn.
I, however, did not agree and claimed it wasn't.

Well, Megan was right and I was wrong.

Tonight I found this picture and as you all can see, the caption clearly identifies it as a picture of Marilyn. In this bigger size you can more easily recognize her than in the smaller one previously posted.
It was published in the Toledo Blade (and probably in a number of other newspapers as well) on May 5, 1948.

So here you are, another Marilyn question finally and definitely solved by this very rare picture. :)

Hi guys,
I can add further information to the photo of Marilyn that Harald posted. The dress was auctioned at Julien's last year and came from the estate of Peter Leonardi. Peter was a New York hairstylist to the celebrities of the past and became Marilyn's secretary, friend, chauffeur, hairstylist and sometimes bodyguard to protect Marilyn from photographers. He can be seen in many photos of Marilyn in New York, hovering in the background. Peter's relationship with Marilyn apparently ended in 1955 over a dispute with Milton Greene concerning his wages. Julien's Auctions reports that Peter maintained his dispute was never with Monroe, but her production company.

WOW Ileana except for the first one do you have any idea for the other pictures as date of the event, where and with who ?
Thanks

Ileana
Chris, the 2nd and 3rd photos are from around April 1952; if I remember correctly, it's at an event celebrating MM's LIFE cover.

Thanks.
Do you have a date for the magazine and the cover?

Lasse

It's from a Cuban newspaper from July 19th, 1952, and the Life cover came out on April 7th.

Thanks Ileana.
I was thinking of the cover of the magazine where your pictures came from. However, I found it and I've got something very special for you.

An often discussed Marilyn photo mystery here on ES has been regarding a well known and often mentioned appearance which Marilyn made at the Camp Pendleton. It has also been known that Marilyn at Pendleton wore the red "Henrietta-dress".
It is also known, by for instance a blurb by Sheila Graham that the visit probably took place on Sunday, April 4th, 1952.
But not a single photo has to our knowledge surfaced.

Well, I have finally found one photo from Camp Pendleton.
Here it is, from the Havana Post of July 19th, 1952.

This is from the same newspaper from which Ileana posted a few pictures above.
Not high quality (I adjusted it a little), but it's Marilyn...

I noticed this picture which was new to me and I also found a caption to it, in Spanish, which read: "En la base naval de el Toro al sur de Hollywood..." etc. This transalates to "At the El Toro naval base south of Hollywood..." I wondered whether the El Toro naval base might be part of Camp Pendleton and did a Google search - and Bingo! Or rather the other way around: the Camp Pendleton was "an outlying field" of the El Toro naval base.

So, enjoy this "brand new" Marilyn picture from April 4, 1952 at Camp Pendleton, probably surrounded by two unidentified Marines.
Isn't this great fun?

Amazing detective work, Lasse!!! jumpymm.gif This time you've outdone youself!

It's Ok now I've found on my files the right things
The pictures with the photographer Richardson were taken for a magazine in December 1952
The magazine was Leatherneck
I am right ?
Thanks

He,he. Thanks Harald. Much appreciated. smile1.gif

And thanks Ileana!

Now, there is more that can be concluded from this Cuban newspaper.
As you may already have noticed, the pictures that Ileana first posted above, were taken when Marilyn, as a publicity stunt, signed her autographs to the LIFE-issue with her picture on the cover and which was issued a week before this signing event. I'll get back to this some more later.

But first, regarding the following picture, and the corresponding ones, which we also have been discussing here, without being able to definitely find a date and a place for.

(The first one is as posted on ebay, the second my adjusted version of the same)
This is a "landscape" orientated version of this "portrait" orientated one:

At the top of the picture from the Cuban newspaper you can read a few letters of the sign above the entrance behind Marilyn and the car.
It says "...OWL" then there are parts of letters which should read "Rexall" and finally you can spot the bottom part of a few more letters, no doubt the beginnning of the word"DRUGSTORE".
I checked by a Google search, and there was this widely spread chain of "The Owl" drugstores across the United States. They were in business from the early 20th century and there are still some (or many?) in operation (maybe some of our American members can add to this). The "Rexall" is the trade mark of another company which at one time bought the "Owl" chain and added their name to it.
There is also a caption to the picture, which translated from Spanish says that Marilyn is standing outside the entrance of the "Owl" drugstore. (Sometimes it has been suggested that this signing of LIFE magzines took place at the Schwab's drugstore. Now we know that this is not the case.)

While various suggestions have previously been put forward as to where and when of these picture of Marilyn with the car, we can now safely say that they were taken probably around April 11-12 (Fri-Sat), 1952 at one Owl Drugstore in Hollywood.

(However there were many "Owl" drugstores in Los Angeles, why we need further research to tell the exact address of this one. There was for instance one at the corner of Wilshire and Western streets, another one at the corner of the Hollywood Boulevard and Cahuenga Boulevard (the building is still there) )
