hi friends!
still i´m doubting about these photos
differences... mocambo, crescendo, sammy´s party or not?
same day?
arghhhhh
then... date? place? event? differences?
Sorry Jeannette, but where are the photos??
Hey Jeannette,
I remember that you've asked this question a long time ago but here is my info again
They're at the Mocambo Club in December 1955. We haven't find out about the exact day so far - maybe we'll find out know
I hope, this will help you meanwhile
but all photos?
The 1st 3 are from the Macombo club.
The next are from Sammy's return party after his accident( note the eye patches)
Marilyn's hair looks different to me. As we know she likes to wear the same outfit
more than once. I have them in my files as 2 different events. I don't know if this helps??
I believe they're all taken at the Mocambo Club and they celebrated there the return of SD.jr after his car accident - on all photos! I guess some pics are simply taken at later hours during the party. YMO
In December 2, 1954, Sammy made his first public appearance since his accident, wearing an eye patch, when he went to hear Mel Torme's show at the Crescendo Club on Sunset Strip. This was an informal event and not publicized before hand. The house photographer took the photos of them.
On January 11, 1955, Sammy made his return to show business during a show at Ciro's nightclub. Personally, I think this is the one featuring Jeff Chandler and Tony Curtis with the eye-patches, as there were many celebrities onhand that night to welcome him back to show business.
Yes. I believe they are. Possibly in a private room, etc.
ahhhhhhh, ok, and this one?
That was actually taken at someone's home. I can't remember who, right now. I will have a look and see if I can come up with it.
A series of photos was auctioned off on ebay last year and it told where they were.
This one Amber posted above was also taken that night.
Look at the differences...there are slight ones with milton greene....
Different places. Sammy has different outfit here with Jeff Chandler. Check out the smaller photos.
Aha!!!!!!!
So there ewre THREE different occasions, not just two.....
The one in a person's house (milton and marilyn on the couch)...the one where everybody wears eyepatches and the one at the Macambo with Mel Torme!!!
But which dates go with which pic????
STACEY...HELP!!!!!!

Hey Nettie, found one without the watermark for you.
Look at Marilyn's dress in these two photos. It is not the same dress. It has a similar bodice and spaghetti straps.
In the second one she has a sweater, is wearing a belt and a longer skirt.
Also, I found a pic of Sinatra and Garland which appears to be in the same room as Marilyn, Greene and Curtis. They were all at the Ciros show in 1955 for Sammys return to show business.
Also, Tony Curtis is dressed the same in the pics.
The group attended a party in the home of Sammy's publicist, Jess Rand.
They then went to see Mel Torme at the Crescendo Club.
December 1954
January 1955. Ciro's. Sammy Davis, Jr's return to show business.
I believe the candids with the eyepatches were taken at a private
party after the show. Probably in a back room at Ciro's. Just my
opinion.
Thank you... again, Stacy. Especially for the no watermarked picture. It's beautiful. I just saved all that info. Funny, how long Marilyn has been around Frank and Sammy, The Rat Pack, etc. I believe she was a good friend to have. Their friendship lasted to the end.
I have been reading "In Black and White The Life of Sammy Davis Jr." by Wil Haygood from the local library. I HAVE GOT TO BUY A SCANNER. On page 174 it has the beautiful picture that I post here very tiny, 2nd on the bottom left, of Marilyn so very cozy and so sweet and with Milton and others: This is what the caption says:
" Days after Sammy was realeased from the hospital in San Bernardino, Jess Rand, on left, hosts a party for him. Film star Jeff Chandler is on Sammy's left. (The woman on Chandler's left was a party crasher; the host had never met her before.) Seated next to Marilyn Monroe is renowned photographer Milton Greene. Whenever Sammy found himself in a photo with Monroe, he would soon begin denying rumors that they were having an affair. The denial was Sammy's way of titillating the tabloits-inasmuch as the rumor found a life only in Sammy's breathless denial of it. "
But read this from page 176:
" On December 2, Jess Rand threw a birthday party for himself, his last as a single man. His wedding to pretty Bonnie Byrnes was a week away. Sammy liked parties; he showed at Jess's wearing his eye patch. Beneath it could be seen a large white bandage still covering the eye. It looked frightful, as did the scar across his face. It seemed as much a coming-out party for Sammy as a birthday party. Many of Rand's and Sammy's friend's were there, giving the evening a feeling of warmth and celebration for both of them. Jeff Chandler looked, as always, smoothly elegant. The breathless woman hudling near photographer Milton Greene was Marilyn Monroe. She wore a black dress with spaghetti straps, and looked both seductive and hazy. "
On page 177 it reads:
" On December 8, 1954, Sammy Davis Jr., turned twenty-nine years old. He celebrated in his on home, on Evanview Drive. Sammy celebrated in his first home by throwing a party. As soon as she arrived, Cindy Bitterman could tell how happy Sammy was to be there. " Judy Garland was there ", Bitterman remembers. " Sinatra was there. The place was crowded. I had gotten there with Bob Neal, a wealthy guy from Texas. "
On page 178 there is a picture of Frank Sinatra sitting beside Cindy Bitterman. He looks exactly the same as in Stacy's photo with Judy Garland. He has the same suit and tie. It is the same room. You can clearly see the stripped curtain. And the caption reads:
" Frank Sinatra and Cindy Bitterman. She played the roll of blunt-talking sister to Sammy. It is December 8, 1954, Sammy's twenty-ninth birthday party. The pure joy of his survival from the car crash three weeks earlier can be seen in their eyes. Sammy hovers above them, playing both host and fan at his own party. He raises his camera: photograph by Sammy Davis Jr. "
So they must be in Sammy's house in these photos with the stripped curtains. But there is no mention of Marilyn attending the birthday party.
Then on pages 187-188 it reads:
" On January 11 they climbed into the Cadillac, and rolled through the night air to Ciro's. Will was quiet, Sam Sr. fatherly. They'd done this hundreds of times, all through the years. But never like this- the air alive with anticipation and curiosity. When they opened the door to their dressing room, they saw flowers everywhere. They'd never seen so many flowers before, with so many sentimental notes attached.
Automobiles cruised up to the front of the nightclub and valet attendants rushed to open the doors. And there, in the lights, alighting from the car as if rising up from the night itself-flash upon flashupon flash- Marilyn Monroe. The flashes caught her jewelry, her smile, her cleavage. Marilyn was accompanied by Milton Greene, the LIFE photographer, and Amy, his wife.
Sammy was on stage for an hour, then twenty minutes more, then twenty minutes longer. Allan Grant, the Life photographer sent to cover the opening sanpped away, even turning his camera on the audience. "
This is the same Allan Grant who photographed Marilyn before she died. I would love to see his photos of the Ciro's event. I have read two of Davis' biographies and there was no mention of Mel Torme in the Mocambo Club event in either of them. In the book Gonna Do Great Things- The Life of Sammy Davis Jr. it says:
" Following his unforgettable return to Ciro's, Sammy, his dad, and Will took the act on the road. From Boston, the Trio went to New York for the capper of the tour, Sammy's return to the Copa. As at Ciro's, Davis enjoyed a celebrity-packed audience of sympathetic fans. The rooters included Eddie Fisher, Marilyn Monroe (whom Sammy had met the night of his return to Ciro's). "
Why would they say Sammy and Marilyn met at Ciro's when Milton has them together in 1954 when he was shooting the cover of his 1st music album? Anyway, I hope I haven't made things worse now.
Do you guys see anything similar in these pictures?
Same tableware and candles. Ciro's?
hey nereida, you are right!!
Marilyn and Sammy had known each other since at least 1952.
Great info Nettie. I just ordered that book. I had read it at the library one day. I love the pic you were talking about.
The night of Sammy's Birthday party, December 8th, Sinatra, Bob Neal and his girlfriend and Judy Garland went to the Crescendo club after the party to hear Mel Torme. Sinatra ended up punching the club's publicity director.
The newspaper article never mention anything about Marilyn being in the club or with the party.
I've got the date of the Crescendo Club outing as December 2, 1954. After hearing Mel sing, Sammy, Milton and Marilyn went to the Mocambo Club.
Here is a couple of pics of Milton and MM at the Mocambo Club. You can see that the candles are clearly labled. And Marilyn is wearing her fur coat.
It's turning out to be quite a conundrum.
In the two previously posted pics, it does seem that they are at Ciro's. Thanks to Nettie's detective work.
Sammy seems to be wearing a bandage under his eye-patch. Like the author said he did after first injuring his eye. This could still be in December I guess. They might have all gone to Ciro's...or it could be January 11th.
Thank you Stacy. They sure did party alot during that time. These darn candles and plates have me confused. I guess they were popular at the time. I can see the name on your Mocombo pictures. And Ciro's are marked too, but we cannot see the name in our Sammy pictures. Then I find this 1952 picture of the Mocombo and IT has the same plates. Ah, well.
Man, I have learned alot from the Sammy biography. Amy Greene was friend with Sammy for 30 years, I read, to the very end of his life. In Milton's Marilyn Amy said she was never jealous of Marilyn and that she knew they were not lovers. That was nice. I don't believe they were either. But they sure did love one another. They appear to be so comfortable being themselves together. I like the way they looked together. Nice couple. Why didn't she meet someone like Milton and marry him? Very nice wife Milton had though to trust him enough to do the things that he did. She was obviously very secure in what she had.
What a great life they all seem to have, Frank and and Eva, and everyone. Did you know that both Frank Sinatra and Joe DiMaggio had this thing about being touched? Both responded violently to a simple pat on the back. Very detached. I wonder what happened to them that made them so? So I think I'll drop this issue with the different clubs. I wish I could find pictures from the Crescendo event with Marilyn.
If you do get the book, maybe you can scan our lovely picture of Marilyn and Milton. Nite Nite
Arghhh....confusion!
Can somebody put the pics that go together side by side and name the place, date, etc.??
That would be the greatest....my eyes are hurting trying to go back and forth and compare!
I would do this myself but i am afraid of getting it wrong! HELP
sabine
Same here
Same here guys.
mm
Here is the picture that Nettie was telling us about. And you can see that it's a different night than the one with everyone with eye patches on. Jeff Chandler's tie is different.
Oh my God Stacy ! You got the book ! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you for sharing it.
I LOVE the picture. Look at how sweet she looks; so shy and ever so snuggled next to Milton. I wonder what Amy Greene thought when she saw it? Milton's face is sweet here too. I think they were wasted maybe. After all, it does appear as if they were on a roll from one party to the other.
These are all from the same day, December 2, 1954. She must have gone to see Mel Torme and then to Rand's house for Rand's own birthday party.
These are from Sammy's comeback at Ciros, December 11, 1955.
" On January 11 they climbed into the Cadillac, and rolled through the night air to Ciro's. Will was quiet, Sam Sr. fatherly. They'd done this hundreds of times, all through the years. I wish I had the pictures Allan Grant took for this occasion.
Stacy, send me the picture of Frank and Cathy Bitterman on page 178 from your book. I will add it to this post. As I said, Frank is wearing the same clothes as in the picture of him with Judy Garland that you posted.
So, I believe these were all taken at Sammy Davis' house. And I know the ones with Frank and Judy Garland were taken on December 8, 1954, Sammy's 29th birthday party that he gave himself. I am just not 100% sure the ones in his house, but with Tony Curtis and Jeff Chandler were taken on the same day, because there is no mention of Marilyn being there in the book. And somehow, I have a hard time picturing Marilyn and Frank Sinatra in the same room at this particular time. Maybe there was a 2nd party in his house that we don't know of yet.
" On December 8, 1954, Sammy Davis Jr., turned twenty-nine years old. He celebrated in his on home, on Evanview Drive. Sammy celebrated in his first home by throwing a party. Stacy, the pictures are so tiny in the book. I didn't know that they came out so HUGE when you scanned them. They are just beautiful. There are a few books out there with rare Marilyn pictures. I have GOT to get a scanner. Thank you so much for sharing them with us.
Nettie I recommend that you sell all you have in order to get a scanner. lol Having one is fabulous.
You can resize the pics on the scanner, increase the resolutions, etc.
I'm still learning, but it is so great. I highly recommend getting one.
Mine was under a hundred dollars and it works great. It's a Hulett Packard Scanjet 4470c.
I'm glad I could help you out.
You are right Stacy, and I will try. $100 huh? You are super.
excuse me my ignorance,
then which is verdict?
Thanxs I checked that thread. Was it decided the interview took place on December 2nd then? Looking at the Palm reading pics, it looks to be the same place as her interview.
let´s see, then...
correct me if i´m wrong
December 2, 1954 at Sammy´s home, what are they celebrating?
December 2, 1954 at Crescendo Club, what are they celebrating?
December 11, 1955, Sammy's comeback at Ciros
December 8, 1954, Sammy's 29th birthday
correct?????
Jeannette, you got it perfect.
As far as the first two:
Rand threw himself a party at his own home to celebrate his own birthday and the fact that he was soon to be married man. It was right after Sammy's released from the hospital, so Sammy showed up at Rand's house wearing his eye patch. I think they were celebrating Sammy being out as well.
As far as visiting Mel Torme after his show at The Crescendo, they were still just celebrating.
thanx nereida, then i think that this topic is solved
what do you think?
OK by me.
sabine
Ok, i went over all the information here today and i hope to finally make sense of all of this. It wasn't easy. Feel free to double check....
Ok, i now get it that the following pics were all taken on the same day: January 11th 1955.
First, the party at a friend's house, then Ciro's, then Mocambo
solved for me
great suus!!!
December 2, 1954 is the correct date when Sammy first appeared in public after his accident. It is backed up by newspaper sources.
Marilyn and Sammy
Notice the different outfit (skirt) she is wearing here.
I love all the pictures taken around 55, she looks so happy!
I agree with Suus, Nettie, simply wonderful!
These is one of my favorite threads. I love Marilyn on this day with friends.
I think I may have found the missing piece to this puzzle that will finally resolve this, much differently than has been stated previously. The one thing that seemed to be throwing everyone off was the books not specifying that Marilyn and Tony Curtis were at Sammy's birthday party on December 8th. The books only talked about Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland. Well, I believe this to be proof positive that they were. Drum roll please...
YES ! How awesome Jim ! That one picture you found of Tony with the group tied it up perfectly.
I am very happy. We just need those pictures of Ciro's, like you said.
Thank you much.
Hey Jim, I found to you!
give me some time to read this post so old and I tell you something
two hours later...
now I want your opinion... am I wrong?
seven years is a long time and more knowledge... although my English is still pathetic
Jim and Jeannette have done a great job so far in narrowing down the events from these photos♥
Here is a photo from Sammy Davis, Jr's comback appearance at Ciro's, January 11, 1955. The one
of all three of them is by Allan Grant.
Marilyn in jewelry ?
This one bigger ...
Finally, the January 11, 1955, for the show of Sammy Davis at Ciros,
Did Marilyn was present to this party ?!..
it´s a pitty this fake
Hola Jeannette me gustaría contactar contigo por si me puedes aclarar la fecha de estas fotos pues yo tengo un lió tremendo.
eduardo.caballero@terra.com
From "Yes I can" by Sammy Davis, about his post-accident return at Ciro's
... ... So i'd asked Milton to bring her to the opening. When the dressing room cleared,he asked "You want to go back to my place and have a drink"?"Not on your Rolliflex, Milton, old buddy. I've had it with the Garbo bit. You and i are going to take Marilyn to the Mocambo, then it's a definite see-and-be-seen at the Crescendo"
Isn't the blond chap with Sammy Davis actually Jeff Chandler?
yes it is jeff chandler
Just read your article Megan
Marilyn sloppy dress and sloppy hair.
Marilyn touring the night spots wearing a blouse, slacks and low-heeled shoes. (I wonder where this was)
She wore the most gorgeous mink coat, full length. She let it drag on the floor and she even sat on It You just don't sit on that kind of fur coat !
Isn't she so sweet and so delicate looking ?
You can see Jacques Cernes sleeve on the left of the photo.
This image of Marilyn Monroe and her infamous manager Milton Greene was taken in 1955 not long after her divorce from Joe DiMaggio. This photo was taken at Gene Norman's legendary Crescendo nightclub in Pasadena, California known for being a pioneer in crossing the racial barriers in both it's patrons and performers. Regular acts there in this era included Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. Other photos of that same evening show Marilyn and Milton Green with Mel Torme and Sammy Davis Junior.
Wonderful photo
better quality
Arthur Silber, Jr. Interview where he tells specifically about having this picture taken of himself, Marilyn, Sammy and Jeff Chandler. [url="https://musiclegends.ca/arthur-silber-interview/"]https://musiclegends.ca/arthur-silber-interview/
"Marilyn Monroe Do you remember meeting her ?"
"She's a very quiet, very timid. She is not what everybody tried to make her be. Trust me, she was not. "
" She was always under control of whosoever had her working for them at the time. She just let too many people control her. All the way down from President Kennedy, his brother and the rest of the people. I'm not going to get into that story 'cuz I think everybody thinks they know the whole story and they really don't. "
"All she wanted was to be happy. She really wanted to be married and have a baby. I can tell you that."
" Just from she and I talking together at a party once, as a matter of fact. She was very nice to me. I have a picture of that, of her talking to me. Matter of fact, that picture is in my book, Jeff Chandler and myself and Marilyn Monroe. That's who is in the picture. [/b][/i]A very simple little party. Enough of that. Ask me another question. "
So, is this the actual photo of Silber with Chandler and Marilyn ? Or is there another of the 3 of them alone without Sammy as he says in the interview ?
oh, great info Jeannette.
Fred Robbins was a DJ
Yes, photo by Jess Rand, but... what's WABC Radio Personale?
It was the radio station where he worked as a "personality."
oh! thank you!!!
