Everlasting Star Community _ The Book Club _ Wish List

Posted by: Paju Oct 1 2006, 07:04 PM

Hey guys bye1.gif
I'm sure a lot of us have some sort of a wish list when it comes to MM books. My wishlist changes all the time, but here's the list as it is now.

These are at the top (in some order, actually):

The ones I want the most:
Monroe: Girl Waiting (her drawings & art)
Banner: Marilyn - Passion & Paradox
DD Group
Ricci: Marilyn (big book about the Ferragamo exhibit)
Howard & Northcliffe: Marilyn. Her Life in Pictures
Shaw: Marilyn New York Years

These too when they are published:
John Florea's Marilyn
Blue Book Days

I'm interested in hearing your wish lists! biggrin.gif

These used to be on my wish list but now I have them clapping.gif :
Shaw, Sam & Rosten, Norman: Marilyn Among Friends
Miracle, Berniece: My Sister Marilyn
Barris, George: Marilyn. Her Life In Her Own Words
Clayton, Marie: Marilyn Monroe. Unseen Archives.
Guiles, Fred: Norma Jean
Reise, Randall & Hitchens, Neil: The Unabridged Marilyn. Her Life From A To Z.
Haspiel, James: Marilyn. The Ultimate Look At The Legend
Rosten, Norman: Marilyn, An Untold Story
Blonde Heat: The Sizzling Screen Career Of Marilyn Monroe
Doll, Susan: Marilyn Monroe. Her Life & Legend
Vitacco-Robles, Gary: Cursum Perficio. Marilyn Monroe’s Brentwood Hacienda. The Story Of Her Final Months.
Churchwell, Sarah: Marilyn Monroe monta elämää (this is Many Lives Of MM in Finnish)
Dougherty, James: To Norma Jeane With Love, Jimmie
Kirkland, Douglas: An Evening With Marilyn
Stern, Bert: Complete Last Sitting
Christie's Marilyn Monroe Auction Catalogue
Strasberg: Marilyn and Me: Sisters, Rivals, Friends
Morgan, Michelle: Marilyn Monroe. Private and Undisclosed
Gilmore, John: Marilyn Monroe. A Memoir.
Billy Wilder’s Some Like It Hot
Cabanas: Marilyn In Spain
Greene: But That's Another Story
Carpozi: Marilyn Monroe
Murray & Shade: The Last Months of Marilyn Monroe
Taraborrelli: Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe
Havers: Marilyn in Words, Pictures & Music
Glatzer: Marilyn Monroe Treasures

edited because I moved some books from "I wish I had them" to "I have them!" and changed the order of the books on the wish list a little, plus added some new books...

Posted by: Marloes Oct 2 2006, 05:27 PM

Oh I have soooo many books I still want rolleyes1.gif :

Marilyn Monroe by Maurice Zolotow
Cursum Perficio: Marilyn Monroe’s Brentwood Hacienda, the Story Of Her Final Months by Gary Vitacco-Robles
The DD Group by David Marshall
To Norma Jeane With Love by James Dougherty

and so many more.... I will update later thumbup1.gif

laugh.gif I have only one book on my wish list, because it's quite expensive. It's the Compelete Last Sitting, the Bert Stern photos.
Interesting topic, Paju! tongue.gif

Posted by: Paju Oct 2 2006, 07:59 PM

Marloes, out of those books I only have Zolotow's book (as you can see the rest are on my wishlist), and it is a very good book. It's not as credible as maybe Spoto's or Guiles' biographies are, but it's still very informative and well written. I really hope you'll be able to get it soon! biggrin.gif
Katri, The Complete Last Sitting is also a book I'd love to have. It's such a huge book full of pictures... I was thinking of adding it to my wishlist. Even if Stern isn't my favorite photographer that book would still be awesome to have! biggrin.gif

Posted by: nicky62 Oct 2 2006, 08:27 PM

we should make an exchange club here anyone having the books mentioned could trade or sell them to others for a reasonable price i mean not EBAY price nor AMAZON but one we could afford i have many doubles now that i am moving i will make a list of all doubles i got
my hugs to all

Good idea, Nicky:)

I've been lucky to find most of the books I thought I'd never find during the last few years. Including Joe Franklin/Laurie Palmer's The MM story and Leigh Weiner's Hollywood farewell, Bernard's Requiem for Marilyn and Clark Kidder's Uncovers. Now what I have high on my list is

-Richard Dyer's Star Dossier One and.... I have to edit the post when I remember them all... I still have a lot I want, but I tried to get the most difficult ones first and then just pick up the easy ones that are missing:)

Posted by: Paju Oct 12 2006, 05:45 PM

One less item on my list... I just bought Sarah Churchwell's book biggrin.gif

Posted by: Tara Oct 12 2006, 07:03 PM

My wish list is very long, so I'm just going to mention a few rare or expensive items:

Marilyn Monroe: The Life, The Myth (this one is more of a dream than a wish!)
Marilyn By Moonlight by Jack Allen
Marilyn Monroe In Spain by Frederic Cabanas

And I very much hope that Ralph Roberts' book will be published one day...I'll be first in the queue!

Crossing another book off my list...
I got Haspiel's Marilyn: The Ultimate Look At The Legend! biggrin.gif
(more about that in the book's thread)

Posted by: Katri^ Oct 29 2006, 06:34 PM

One more book on my list, Kidder's Marilyn Memorabilia! smile1.gif I'd love to have it for Christmas... biggrin.gif Though I should tell that to my mother!

Posted by: Paju Apr 10 2008, 06:17 AM

Wow, you've gotten some really nice books!
I should update my list too. I've gotten some, some I still want, and there are also some books I haven't mentioned earlier but should definitely be on my wishlist.

Posted by: Bobby Apr 11 2008, 04:01 PM

Looking through these lists makes me realise one thing, I need more money! I think it will be some time before I own every item from my wish list.

The Marilyn Encyclopedia (Adam Victor)
Marilyn: Cover to Cover (Clark Kidder)
The Complete Last Sitting (Bert Stern)
Quote Unquote (Janice Anderson)
Milton's Marilyn (Milton Greene)

...And in a perfect world, the Christie's Catalogue too. Alright, I suppose in a truly perfect world, I want to possess every Marilyn book ever published. Is that so much to ask?! blush.gif

Good luck to all of you in your quest to complete your wish list.

Posted by: Katri^ May 10 2008, 10:30 AM

Yay biggrin.gif I can take one of the books off my list! I'm going to get the Complete last sitting for my birthday! I'm so excited clapping.gif

Posted by: Tiina May 12 2008, 10:36 PM

Posted by: abeautifulchild May 13 2008, 01:06 AM

I've crossed 5 books off my wishlist, so I am over the moon! banana.gif
I got Cursum Perficio: Marilyn Monroe's Brentwood Hacienda: The Story of Her Final Months by Gary Vitacco-Robles (I can't wait to start this book! I love the Brentwood house and I know that it meant a lot to Marilyn so this has got to be a very interesting read), Legend: The Life and Death of Marilyn Monroe by Guiles (now I wish I had ordered Norma Jean instead, but oh well...), Conversations with Marilyn by WJ Weatherby (I've been wanting this one for so long!), Why Norma Jean Killed Marilyn Monroe by Lucy Freeman, and Marilyn Monroe Confidential: An Intimate Personal Account by Lena Pepitone ( blush.gif I have to read this for myself! I've heard that it's a bunch of BS, but it can be interesting to read a book authored by someone who was around Marilyn a lot).

I've spent the last hour or so looking through all the threads in The Book Club here on ES, and now I want The Ultimate Look at the Legend by Jimmy Haspiel even more! And I'm still wishing for The Complete Last Sitting and the Christie's Catalogue the most of all!- but I think I'm going to have to wait for my birthday :( 4 months to go!

Posted by: Bobby May 13 2008, 07:45 AM

Lucky you Alex! I really enjoyed Weatherby's book (the only one of your new five that I have) and I hope you like it too, sure you will.

Enjoy thumbup1.gif

I don't have many books so I want them all pretty much but top of the list:

Marilyn Among Friends by Sam Shaw
The Marilyn Monroe Treasures by Jenna Glatzer
Her Life in Her Own Words by George Barris
The Mmm Girl by Tara!
Platinum Fox by Cyndi de la Hoz
My Story by Marilyn and Ben Hecht
Marilyn by Andre de Dienes
Marilyn in New York by Ed Feingersh
Marilyn: An Untold Story by Norman Rosten
Marilyn Monroe: Private and Undisclosed by Michelle Morgan
My Sister Marilyn by Berneice Baker Miracle
The Prince, the Showgirl and Me by Colin Clark

I'm not counting books I am MUCH too poor to afford, haha.

I thought I'd post my updated list of what I'm after!

{} Marilyn in Spain
{} Hometown Girl
{} Marilyn and the Camera
{} The Complete Last Sitting
{} Marilyn The New York Years
{} Marilyn: Falling for Marilyn/Niagara
{} Marilyn's Addresses
{} Some Like It Hot

I've going to Melbourne next month to the bookstores old and new to scour for books! I hope I find at least 1 of these (well really I hope at least 4! - & the camera, complete sitting, niagara and addresses!)

Posted by: Scottish Sugar Mar 15 2009, 05:10 PM

Kowalczyk, I can highly recommend Platinum Fox, it's a beautiful book full of stunning pictures. I have Marilyn at 20th Century Fox, so I thought the books would be fairly similar at first, but believe me, they're completely different, highly recommended.

April, make sure you don't pay too much for the Some Like It Hot book, I managed to get mine for £70 from amazon and it was the proper version with the replica pormpt book aswell. which was a complete steal as I regularly see it for at least £200. Just wait it out, you will find it at a decent price.

I'll be saving some money for the Christie's Catalogue. That's the book I want next!

Posted by: Scottish Sugar Feb 12 2010, 07:24 PM

I work part time in a Supermarket and through having to deal with customers day in, day out, I met a woman who is a Marilyn fan (I knew this because she carried a Marilyn purse)

Well anyway, a few weeks later, she comes up to me and says "Do you still like Marilyn Monroe?".. "of course!" I said, then she goes on to tell me that she's moving back to Australia and was having a clear out and GIVES me the Marilyn Christies auction catalogue for free! saying that she's rather it went to someone who was really going to appreciate it. I was astounded and gobsmacked that someone would be that kind and generous to a girl they don't even know properly.
The best thing about it was.. she didn't even know my name and yet she was willing to do something that thoughtful for me. Really made my day.. no YEAR! smile1.gif

So anyway, the Christie's catalogue is a wonderful book, I highly recommend you get it smile1.gif

xx

Christie's catalog is awesome. It's expensive and hard to find in bookstores. I got lucky years ago and Christie's was mine for like $40. I was shocked, ran out of the store thinking they'd make a mistake. I LOVE it.

I will be going through my Marilyn stuff (mostly books) soon. Im thinking about selling them but only want them to go to a loving Marilyn fan, thats why I am talking about it here. I currently live in AZ in the US. I would prefer if someone can swing down who lives in AZ and pick them up because I dont want to pay for shipping. Or if I sell them individually maybe I can ship them within the US. If anyone is interested let me know, if so, I will list out all the books Im willing to part with here.

marilynbybrandon_190.gif Hi Mel, I'd love some MM books - the soft cover ones with lots and lots of pix - especially DeDienes and some others that I can't think of. I live in Hawaii though.
I think you should list them here because as you said, they should go to someone who loves MM.

Sounds good, I'm very interested in this list. Please by all mean show us, I'm very curious and interested.

Thank you so much.

Kev

marilynbybrandon_190.gif Hi Mel, thanks for posting the list. The 2 soft cover ones sound awesome. Are there lots of pictures in them? I prefer soft cover books. Do they lie flat when opened? Also, you didn't include prices or payment method. Hopefully you have paypal.

Update: My 3 books arrived safely along with a lovely card with note from Mel.
The books are great though they don't have any new pix in them. They are wonderful additions to my MM collection. I have mostly kindle books and now 4 soft cover and 2 hard cover ones to go with them.

Marilyn: A Life in Pictures is very pretty with big pages and a nice typeset. There are several full page photos in it.

The Ultimate Marilyn is a smaller book in terms of page size. It has a lot of information and also Marilyn quizzes.

Movie Icons Monroe Taschen is a small hard cover book and the pages are glossy heavy paper...lots of nice pix non-English text.

Any of these books would be great for your MM library.

Thanks again Mel clapping.gif I ended up having the iced mocha coffee and the chilled water.

Hey! One softcover book is large and is a picture book Marilyn a Life in Pictures. The other is a reference book that has pictures in it The Ultimate Marilyn. I did think of you going through one book that I didn't post. Its a hardcover book but its nothing but pictures and the size of the book is small for it being a picture book so its handy. Let me know if your interested in it. Usually soft cover picture books don't lie flat when opened, hardcover usually does. Marilyn Monroe in the Movies has a lot of pictures from her movies but is not a picture book necessarily. Marilyn a Life in Pictures that I mentioned earlier is a picture book but its quite large size wise. I will work on the prices thumbup1.gif Yes paypal payments only! smile1.gif

I have about 7 more books that I have to read quickly through to determine if I still want them or not. So I will come back and update the list.

marilynbybrandon_190.gif Hi Mel, the small book sounds good though it's hard cover...Really like picture books the best...Please forgive the delay in replying, my laptop died and I am struggling away on my XP netbook so things take longer and internet is totally slow or off here. A lot of the time when I am on the forum the most current posts are not showing up as well. I don't know why that happens.

ps: also: I am still looking for that article which I think is a 1962 Movie Stars or Movie Life - it has about 8 or 10 pix MM with Jack Lord during their actor's studio days in 1955. A good scan would be sufficient as I am making my collections digital.

Hi Mel,

Today must be book day because I bought Kindle books...lol

I'd like these from your list:

MARILYN A LIFE IN PICTURES - BY DIANA KARANIKAS HARVEY // SOFTCOVER $9.00
THE ULTIMATE MARILYN - BY Ernest W. Cunnigham // SOFTCOVER $5.00
MOVIE ICONS MONROE BY TASCHEN $6.00

what about the postage?

You can send them regular mail...
I'd also like to have a signature confirmation so it comes right to my door and I have to sign for it.
I think that's $3 at least it was...it may be free now...haven't bought anything through the mail in a while.

please send me a pm with your paypal info and I can send you my address etc.

I just sent you a pm with my info on it...

thanks marilynbybrandon_190.gif

marilynbybrandon_190.gif Thanks Mel, that is good...I am concerned about that because when I get a book I scan my favorite stuff to save wear and tear on the book. I love soft cover books especially those with lots of pix. I wish I had the DeDienes ones and that Metamorphosis was soft cover...can't think of anymore but I hope these books of yours have pix that are new to me...I notice books tend to print the same pix over and over.

I will pm you my email etc so you know where to send the paypal invoice.
