Can you guys blame her? I mean, how many dime a dozen public event fundraisers had she done up to that point? All the celebrities get together for dinner and dining. They all break out the alchohol. Yada...yada...yada. And I guarantee the conversation was the same too. Chitter chatter of non importance. I have nothing against these events per say, just that Marilyn was there in 'name' only and people there didn't 'really' care what she thought or said.

It makes me so mad how Marilyn was used. I have read so many accounts of people belittling her intelligence in the midst of company or crowds. I know I sound harsh in reference to these social events, but in Hollywood, you were a commodity and not a person.

I look at these photos and I see Marilyn's mind and attention span in a different sphere. She is obviously distraught and something is wrong. On her face, you can tell she is aging rapidly, her eagerness to smile is becoming less and less.

We have to remember how hard it was for her to be in the public eye 24/7. I think she thought of her life as being Marilyn Monroe and in public the only life worthwhile, no matter how much it hurt her.

And her final unfinished movie entitled "Something's Got To Give". And something sure did give. Her life.

Thanx God we all love her and actually cared about her personal feelings or dreams she might have had. I think she knew her true fans were this. I just wish we could have done more.

Of course you are forgetting that she didn't actually have to go to this event - unless Lee Strasbourg has a gun pressed into her back in this picture.....

I think you're right on the mark here - the months after Marilyn's divorce from Arthur, with her breakdown and hospitalisation, were among the worst of her life. She really hit rock-bottom. I suspect she attended this event purely as a favour to the Strasbergs. She looks fragile, as if her heart's not really in it.

Posted by: Zelda Zonk Sep 19 2005, 09:27 PM

Right on the mark, Megan. thumbup1.gif And, Fav, you're right, she didn't have to attend the event, but I think she did it for the Strasbergs, as Tara said.
It breaks my heart to see pictures of this event.

Although Marilyn's beauty is evident in these pictures, I also think that she has a vague, faraway look in her eyes in many of them. Despite her obvious attractiveness and the stylishness of her dress and hair, I get the impression that her spirit was tired. Seeing these photos makes me understand how some of the people she encountered felt that they wanted to help her.

Posted by: MarilynSpice Jan 2 2009, 06:34 AM

I agree...she does look like her mind is far away and her spirits are low. Lots of people think MM looks not so well here and I can't say the same. She looks beautiful because beauty belonged to her naturally and she was stunning no mater what but it is true her aura does seem to be very low so maybe in that sense she doesn't look too well.

Lovely, Paul. Never seen the first one. I agree Marilyn looks sad and weary here. With all that was going on at the time - the breakdown, Augusta's death - I'm sure Marilyn only went as a favour to the Strasbergs.

Actually, I think she is as thin here as she was in the final weeks of her life. This night shows the harrowing effects of the divorce from Miller, her forced commitment to a mental hospital and the box office failure of the Misfits. This event, and the Willy Rizzo photos session two weeks before her death are the most tragic images taken of her.

Posted by: Nettie May 9 2010, 10:14 PM

Same man.

" In the early 1960's, John Springer was the publicist who took over Marilyn Monroe's press responsibilities so that Patricia Newcomb could devote more of her time to Marilyn. "

" As a press agent Springer, handled the wedding of Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio in 1954. When Monroe died in 1962, he helped DiMaggio make his ex-wife's funeral arrangements. "

and where´s Roseland Dance Hall? what´s exactly?

Roseland Ballroom
From Wikipedia

The Roseland Ballroom (also referred to as Roseland Dance City) is a catering hall/music venue/dance hall in a converted ice skating rink with a colorful ballroom dancing pedigree in New York City's theatre district on West 52nd Street.

The venue, according to its website, can accommodate 3,200 standing (with an additional 300 upstairs), 2,500 for a dance party, between 1,500 and 1,800 in theatre style, and 800-1,000 for a sit-down dinner.

The quirky venue has hosted everything from a Hillary Clinton birthday party to annual gay circuit parties to movie premieres to musical performances from all genres, including AC/DC, Madonna, Paul McCartney, Thom Yorke, Portishead, Dream Theater, Metallica, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Ramones, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Fugazi, Above & Beyond, Alanis Morissette, Weezer, The Dead, Phish & Sublime with Rome.

The rear of the venue faces West 53rd Street and the Ed Sullivan Theater. It is seen virtually every time that comedian David Letterman has outside antics during taping of the Late Show with David Letterman beside his theater (prompting various attempts to paint the industrial-looking wall to make it look better on national television).

History
51st Street location
Roseland was founded initially in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1917 by Louis Brecker with financing by Frank Yuengling of the D. G. Yuengling & Son beer family.

In 1919 they moved the venue to 1658 Broadway at 51st Street in New York. It was a "whites only" dance club called the "home of refined dancing", famed for the big band groups that played there, starting with Sam Lanin and his Ipana Troubadours. Couples danced the jitterbug, Lindy Hop, and Charleston under the Roseland's famed star-studded ceiling.

Orchestras that played the venue included Vincent Lopez, Harry James, Louis Armstrong, Tommy Dorsey, and Glenn Miller. The appearance by Count Basie was a turning point in his career and a break though in the all-white atmosphere of the club. One of his songs was to be the "Roseland Shuffle".

Brecker popularized Marathon dancing until it was banned, staged female prizefights, yo-yo exhibitions, sneezing contests, and dozens of highly publicized jazz weddings with couples who met at the club.

As the club grew older, Brecker attempted to formalize the dancing more by having hostesses dance for 11¢ a dance or $1.50 a half-hour with tuxedoed bouncers (politely known as "housemen") keeping order. It was to work its way into stories by Ring Lardner, Sherwood Anderson, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and John O'Hara.

Current 52nd Street location
The original New York Roseland was torn down in 1956 and it moved to its new venue on West 52nd, a building that Brecker earlier had converted from an ice-skating rink to a roller-skating rink. It had been built in 1922 at a cost of $800,000 by the Iceland ice-skating franchise. A thousand skaters showed up on opening night at the 80-by-200-foot rink on November 29, 1922. Iceland went bankrupt in 1932 and the rink opened as the Gay Blades Ice Rink. Brecker took it over in the 1950s and converted it to roller-skating.

Time magazine described the new Roseland's opening interior as a "purple-and-cerise tentlike décor that creates a definite harem effect." [3] Brecker attempted to maintain its ballroom dancing style, banning rock and roll and disco. In 1974 Brecker told the The New York Times, "Cheek-to-cheek dancing, that's what this place is all about."

Brecker sold the building in 1981. Under the new owners the Roseland began regularly scheduled "disco nights", which gave rise to a period when it was considered a dangerous venue and neighborhood menace.

In 1984 a teenager was shot to death on the dance floor.

In 1990, after Utah tourist Brian Watkins was killed in the subway , four of the eight suspects (members of the FTS gang) were found partying at the Roseland. As a result, Roseland discontinued the "disco nights".

Its low-rise 3-story structure on top of the quarter-acre dance floor in the middle of midtown Manhattan has stirred concerns over it being torn down for redevelopment. In 1996, a new owner, Laurence Ginsberg, filed plans to tear down the venue and replace it with a 42-story, 459-unit apartment building. A spokesman for Ginsberg said the filing was to "beat a deadline for new, more stringent earthquake codes, which went into effect earlier" in 1996. The interior space has been subsequently renovated.

From clubzone.com:

furious.gif Ginsburg (like Trump) is horrible and has torn down a lot of Manhattan buildings if he can and rebuilt with overpriced apartments and skyscrapers that regular people can't afford. Ugh, he contributed to making Manhattan unaffordable!!!!!!!!!! He's not the only one!!! Roseland is from another era but they don't care about that!!!

LOL. Susan Strasberg trying to be a Monroe wannabe. With the hair like MM's and the shoulderless dress. Get real.

I'm not sure about that. Marilyn was like an older sister to her, but Susan's book is very loving of Marilyn even though she titled it "Marilyn and Me: Sisters, Rivals and Friends." The rival part is that Lee treated Marilyn as a daughter rather than Susan and wasn't nice to his children.

Marilyn wasn't always nice to her, like there's a part I can't remember the complete story of but that Marilyn bought the same gift after Susan told her a gift she was buying for Steffi Skolsky. Susan's book is one of my faves about Marilyn. I found her writing very balanced and loving and realistic about Marilyn.

But I never got the impression that Susan felt that way, at least in her book of in interviews. She had her own big career and was taken seriously as an actress and that's what Marilyn wanted. Susan treasured the Mikimoto pearls too that were Marilyn's (given to Paula first) until she had to sell them but died before she could use the money. There's an interview with her wearing the pearls if I recall.

I love that book. Yes, her jealousy wasn't over beauty so much as the fact that her parents only cared about Marilyn's problems but never noticed their own kids'. It was always about Marilyn and other actors from the studio Lee worried about. I felt bad when I read on later years that Susan had a horrible time in life. I think I recall she didn't get much inheritance from him?

No, nothing. Anna Strasberg (yuck) had some influence over Lee and he disinherited Johnny and Susan from his will. He also said he would help Susan's daughter (his granddaughter) and didn't. She had a second husband who was physically abusive to her and then having cancer and dying still fairly young... it just isn't fair. I have mixed feelings about Lee. He betrayed Marilyn as far as I'm concerned by not distributing her things as she wished and leaving them in boxes and leaving her estate to his money hungry wife. pissed.gif

Posted by: Nettie Feb 8 2012, 02:06 AM

I know Marilyn loved him and he did a lot for her. He and Paula were always there when she needed them. But still, he abused his doctor/patient relationship as we all know in so many ways. And for her to leave him all her money is nuts. I think he was cruel for disinheriting his own children. Poor Marilyn, this Anna never even knew her or did a thing for her and she gets everything. Anyway, what an awful hand Susie got dealt. Why ? no.gif

LOL. Susan Strasberg trying to be a Monroe wannabe. With the hair like MM's and the shoulderless dress. Get real.

Susan includes a photo of herself at this event in her book, and the caption is a little self-deprecating in that she said her look was inspired by Marilyn's. She freely admits in her book that she felt jealous of Marilyn at times. I don't mean to belabor a point, but I can understand how she tried to emulate Marilyn, who so easily earned Lee's love and attention, while Lee took comparatively little interest in Susan.

I could go on a rant and demonize Lee Strasberg, but I don't think that's in keeping with the aim of ES. That said, the photos of this event, I think, go a long way to show how worn down Marilyn was at this point in her life.

After reading those articles, saying that the Actor's Studio was broke, I can see why Marilyn felt she needed to attend. I like the way they said they hoped she was feeling well enough to appear. Thanks Sues.

So it was one of MM furs that was the prize in the raffle? Nice. Lucky lady who won it.

Mrs. Jock Whitney won the raffle. There is some discussion about it here:
http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/?showtopic=18153&st=100

I also saw this on an old facebook page, which has since been saved in a cache: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:PKvochr6nUYJ:mbasic.facebook.com/MarilynMonroeForeverInOurHearts%3Fv%3Dtimeline%26filter%3D0%26timecutoff%3D1394617203%26sectionLoadingID%3Dm_timeline_loading_div_-252432001_-283968000_8_%26timeend%3D-252432001%26timestart%3D-283968000%26tm%3DAQDRBw6QzcKq7HIp+mrs+jock+whitney+fur+raffle+actors+studio+benefit&cd=2&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&client=safari

"On 13 March 1961 Marilyn attended the Actor's Studio Benefit, held at Manhattan's Roseland Ballroom, New York. ... Marilyn also helps out with the raffle and holds the prize which was a chinchilla wrap won by Mrs Jock Whitney"
If you page down you can see some photos, too.

I haven't found any information that indicates the fur had belonged to Marilyn or that she had donated it.

This photo has been posted here before, but we can now identify the gentleman with Marilyn - it's Richard Avedon. A B/W version appears in a new biography, Something Personal by Norma Stevens & Steven L.M. Aronson. I've only seen this preview, so I don't know if Marilyn is mentioned again but it seems hopeful!

Just a week or two after being locked up in a psychiatric ward, and after attending Arthur's mother's funeral. She had to be feeling pretty depressed.

Thanks Suus thumbup1.gif

This was just after she was released from the hospital and the funeral was just before this event. I agree, the strain was showing on her beautiful face. Then at the end of the month she flew to Florida for her get away vacation with Joe.
