Posted by: sabine Feb 7 2005, 05:32 PM

Does anybody have more Info on this? We have identified quite a few pics from this day but it was never mentioned where and when this occasion took place.....marilyn's look reminds me of late summer 1953...

According to California marriage records Sheilah Graham was married on February 14, 1953. I assume the reception took place on the same day.

This is an automated reply

Considering the information contributed by our members regarding the original question, we can now consider this investigation as solved.

Posted by: sabine Feb 14 2005, 05:39 PM

Ok, check this out.....we thought we had this one solved.....
But note that in the pic of marilyn with sydney skolsky at the table he's wearing a BOWTIE (i think that is is the actual wedding reception february 14th 1953)...in the other pic he's wearing a LONG TIE and different suit.

sabine

Posted by: Mandydolphin Feb 14 2005, 06:06 PM

You're right.I have to admit that I didn't saw that.

Posted by: chickeyonthego Feb 14 2005, 07:45 PM

Good call Sabine.
Thanks also, R.E.L. Good detective work! We can use you around here.

Posted by: meganmarilyn Apr 16 2005, 05:49 AM

And notice that the pic with Skolsky sitting down wearing the bow tie, there are no Champagne glasses on the table. The pic with him with the long tie, Marilyn is holding a champagne glass (which is obviously the reception).

Let's clarify things......

If it wasn't for sydney skolsky's different outfit we wouldn't be able to tell much....in one set of pics marilyn is wearing white gloves and a black cape. Sydney is wearing a simple tie. Even though marilyn is holding upo a champagne glass, that doesn't mean much....she often drank champagne at parties

In the pics where Marilyn and sydney sit at the table, sydney seems more 'dressed up' in a bowtie and all (more appropriate for a wedding reception than the simple tie)...marilyn isn't wearing gloves nor cape and the very fact that they are sitting at a table with food and coffee looks like the wedding reception to me....what does everybody else think?
And what is the occasion for the other pics (gloves, cape)???

angry.gif There's something wrong with this site today, it wouldn't let me post the appropriate pics....so just take a look above.

sabine

Posted by: Mandydolphin Apr 17 2005, 04:18 PM

But couldn't she had taken off the cape and the gloves??

Posted by: suusmarie Apr 18 2005, 03:24 AM

That would mean Skolsky changed clothing, or atleast tie/bow, during this event eyebrow.gif . I really think Mandy these are two different events wink3.gif .

hug.gif Suus

Posted by: sabine Apr 18 2005, 05:45 PM

Marilyn could have taken off the cape and gloves but Skolsky wouldn't have changed his outfit....
I think that the cape/gloves pics go with the ones de Dienes took of Marilyn inside the bookstore.....what the occasion was, i do not know. But would she be drinking champagne in a bookstore?? Lol....maybe those are also two different event, same clothing. Arghhhh!!!!! scared.gif

sabine

Posted by: sabine Apr 18 2005, 05:59 PM

After careful concideration, i have concluded this about the pics:

These two were taken at the sheila graham wedding reception on 2/14/53.

I feel these were all taken on the same day...i don't know the occasion or correct date (i will asume it was sometime between january-march of 1953)
(Marilyn's hairstyle is identical in all these pics...there are certain characteristics that match perfectly. The clothing is also identical)

sabine

Posted by: Mandydolphin Apr 18 2005, 06:01 PM

So the lady in the picture isn't Sheilah or is she??And what was she doing with Marilyn on a different location if it was her wedding day??

Posted by: sabine Apr 18 2005, 06:07 PM

I don't know if anybody ever said the lady is Sheila Graham or if it was just asumed because it was asumned that the pics were the Graham wedding...which i strongly believe they are not. So it's probobly another lady....i hope so or else i am going out of my mind...lololol...
Does anybody know what the real Sheila Graham looked like?

sabine

(About the above pics...if you look closely, marilyn's hairstyles do look a lot alike in all the pics...but if you see them together like this you can tell there were 2 different occasions...in my opinion)

Posted by: Mandydolphin Apr 18 2005, 06:13 PM

I'm so confused when it comes to these pictures.

I've typed in her name at google and they came up with this picture. So it seems like she's the one and only Sheilah Graham.

Posted by: sabine Apr 18 2005, 06:27 PM

Great pic, mandy....
Ok, here's the deal: If that's really Sheila Graham (which we can't be sure off given that so much wrong information is out there) then the pics with the cape/gloves is from the wedding reception (and skolsky in the regular tie)...
That simply means that the OTHER pics, without cape and skolsky in a bowtie, were taken on a seperate occasion and we have it backwards....
I will snoop around some more....

sabine

Check this out...a movie starring Gregory peck and Deborah Kerr based on Columnist sheila graham relationship with a Scott Fitzgerald...thought this was of some minor interest along my snooping.....

Is there a resemblance to the real woman?

Posted by: Mandydolphin Apr 18 2005, 06:43 PM

This is what she looks like

Posted by: sabine Apr 18 2005, 06:45 PM

Great snooping!!!!!!
We can say with confidence that the pics of marilyn in the cape/white gloves and skolsky in the plain tie are definetly the wedding reception.....why else would they be hanging out with her, all dressed up, sipping champagne?
The other pics (skolsky in bowtie) are from another occasion....BUT WHAT????

sabine

Again, great Job!

I am sure happy we are getting somewhere mf_w00t1.gif ! The lady next to MM is indeed Graham, I have this other shot of them together...
This leaves the problem of the other photos hmm.gif ... Is there someone who owns the 1954 Skolsky magazine he published on MM, maybe he gives some info their, if the photos were used in the mag unsure.gif . I can not access my collection at the moment and am unable to check it out cry.gif !

Posted by: wootness Apr 19 2005, 05:28 AM

Maybe both occasions have to do with Graham, maybe there was a rehearsal dinner or an engagement party?

Posted by: sabine Apr 19 2005, 03:12 PM

Maybe both occasions have nothing to do with eachother and we keep lumping them together and that's what's confusing.
I don't think that there was a rehearsal dinner that Marilyn would attend....that's usually for the family and bridal party.
No, the occasion that we haven't figured out yet is some kind of function or party in early 1953 that we don't know of, YET!!

sabine

Posted by: Mandydolphin Apr 19 2005, 04:41 PM

And the search continues....

Posted by: linkeando Apr 24 2005, 04:49 PM

ok, this is what i think about this mistery according with this url http://www.jwa.org/discover/inthepast/recollections/graham.html

reception

celebration

Posted by: sabine Apr 25 2005, 05:33 PM

Ok, i read the article about Sheila Graham and the photo of her with marilyn, identifying it as "a party"....
Obviously it was sheila's wedding because she has a HEADPIECE on and a white dress....comon now! It wasn't just any ole party....unless people run around with head pieces on every day of the week.... laugh.gif
The two sets of pictures in question, i still believe, have nothing to do with eachother.
Marilyn looks slightly different, and most importantly, skolsky has a totally different outfit on.
Now we just have to figure out where those pics are from...i think the sheila graham wedding ones are figured out.

sabine thumbup1.gif

Posted by: Mandydolphin Apr 25 2005, 05:38 PM

You don't think that Jeannette might have a point??Maybe the reception took place a day or two before the wedding(that's why Syd has two different outfits??).And it wouldn't be the first time Marilyn wore the same outfit to different events.
I don't know I'm just brainstorming.

Posted by: sabine Apr 25 2005, 05:42 PM

Ok, i believe these are the sheila graham reception photos....sheila has a headpiece on and white dress..this looks like a wedding outfit to me...skolsky is in a suit and tie.
Marilyn has white gloves and a black cape style jacket on.

Here Marilyn and skolsky are sitting at a table. He is wearing a tuxedo and bowtie, Marilyn looks similar to the other pics but there are subtle differences.
Why would skolsky change his entire outfit?? Doesn't make sense....
I thought we had this solved....arghhhh!!!! no.gif

Posted by: sabine Apr 25 2005, 05:45 PM

Reception took place a day or two before the actual wedding? When does THAT happen??? blush.gif
Sorry, but why are we trying to force these two sets of pictrues together anyways??? Can't it be some other event other than the sheila wedding???
Let's brainstorm together.......
(In my book, however, the reception always follows a wedding....am I wrong?)
HELP...lol

sabine huh.gif

Posted by: Mandydolphin Apr 25 2005, 06:07 PM

Maybe it was a rehearsal or so.And I was wrong what I meant to say was maybe the reception was later(my mistake sorry).

Posted by: sabine Apr 25 2005, 06:12 PM

Ok, picture me on the floor ripping my hair out.... scared.gif
I have an Idea....let's seperate these sets of pics and find another occasion for one of them OTHER than the sheila graham wedding.... blink.gif
I am looking to see what else was going on socially in early 1953 for Marilyn....maybe we'll get to the bottom of this....
I feel strongly that when you go to a wedding and reception you don't change an outfit that same day (especially for a man)....
I also don't think that marilyn and skolsky would have attended some kind of 'rehearsal' of the wedding. That's usually reserved for family and the wedding party. Unless Marilyn was a bridesmaid and i know she was not.
So...logic tells me that marilyn and skolsky went to a fancy party (he was wearing a tuxedo and bowtie after all)..... rolleyes1.gif ....so, there was something else going on that they attended and ot most likely has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the graham wedding....
Anyways, that's my gut feeling....... coolio.gif

Let me know what you found out.

Posted by: sabine Apr 25 2005, 07:20 PM

Marilyn sightings in early 1953:

february 9th 1953: PHOTOPLAY banquet. marilyn named 'best new actress of 1953'.
Took Sydney skolsky as date (the Man got around!!). She wore the gold lame dress from "gentlemen prefer blondes".

February 1953: "Call me madam" premiere and Marilyn's television "debut". She wore the same type of dress from " diamond are a girl's best friend" in a white version (she wore it again to the walter winchell party, see below)

February 14th 1953: the sheila graham wedding reception (again, with Sydney skolsky)

Lauren Bacall presents Marilyn with the "LOOK Magazine archievment award"...i don't have an exact date for this...DOES ANYBODY HAVE A DATE??? no.gif

March 1953....The Redbook awards for "best young boxoffice personality"..Marilyn wore a similar dress to the KOREA pics and her hair curly

May 13th 1953...walter winchell's birthday party

So far that's what i've found...i will add more to this if i can

sabine

Posted by: sabine Apr 25 2005, 08:01 PM

Oh woah..... mf_w00t1.gif ...what is this??? I never noticed it before because we were so focused on placing the mystery photo into early 1953 (like the graham reception) that we forgot Marilyn also looked like this in the late summer of '53...check it out

Marilyn in mid september 1953 with jack benny and the mysery pic...identical look....i am, however, not saying that these were taken the same day. I am simply comparing marilyn's 'looks'.
Maybe this explains why i can't find an occasion in early 1953 where the mystery event would fit.....
Ok, take a look at the third pic.....total mystery to me. What was the occasion and when did this take place? Looks very similar to the 'mystery ocasion' pic (#2)

I have this event that is such a great mystery as...May 1953 Party for Magazine Awards. I got that information from this site somewhere.

Posted by: dazzledent Dec 18 2006, 03:44 PM

The Redbook Awards Dinner according to another post on this site.

I have Sheilah Graham's book, 'My Hollywood'.
There is a picture of with MM in her white version of the Diamonds dress- it says they are at Ciro's, posing.

In the book there is the photo where Sheilah is wearing the white head-dress and MM is looking at her and above this is a similar pic of Sheilah with Darryl Zanuck - clearly both are from the same event. The Zanuck pic is listed as her 'third wedding reception, Valentine's day 1953'

Of this day, she writes about MM - ' She had promised to come to the reception for my third wedding. Most of the guests had left by the time she had arrived, all little girl and breathless, saying she was sorry. Then she kissed my then 7 yr old son. She wanted all males, no matter what their age, to believe that she loved them and in returnthey would love her. Even my craggy, old boss John Wheeler. He had that smug look on his face when I told him that Marilyn had asked about him, which she did every time she saw me.

Wow. I am reading and she must have not cared for Marilyn much. She says a lot of negative stuff.

Hello

While scrolling through other threads I stumbled across this clipping (I apologise as I can not remember the person who posted it). This clipping shows pictures pictures of Marilyn that I have always associated with Sheila Graham's wedding; including Sidney with this dark suit and bow tie.

The body of the text talks about the Redbook Awards (and Marilyn winning the "best young box office personality" award (which I know, when accepting the award she's wearing the dress she wore in Korea) and one of the captions of the photos references Marilyn making a "solo entrance at a party" (rather than saying she was at Sheila Graham's wedding).

This article and Sidney's two different suits makes me think there are photos on this thread for two different events.

Thoughts anyone?

PS. Thank you to the person who originally posted the clipping.
