Everlasting Star Community _ Rare pictures _ Rare Pictures (26)

Posted by: Tara Aug 16 2013, 07:16 PM

Hi all,

This is a repost from the last thread, just in case you haven't seen it already.

It has come to my attention that some members have been posting large numbers of non-rare pictures on this forum. As older members will know, bandwidth is an issue here. Before you post on this thread, please check if your pictures have been posted previously in the relevant photographer, movie or paparazzi thread. The rare pictures are only for unpublished photos that don't fit elsewhere. Sifting through pages of non-rare photos is not what this thread is for. Obviously I understand that what is rare for one person may not be for another. So when you have large numbers of similar pictures, please take a look at the forum to a) find out if they've already been posted; and b) find out if there is an existing thread for these pictures. And if you have any queries, please don't hesitate to ask on the forum as I'm sure our members will be able to help.

On this note, let's get posting!

Tara

Like Tara told it: The rare pictures are only for unpublished photos that don't fit elsewhere.
a) find out if they've already been posted;
and b) find out if there is an existing thread for these pictures.
So these pictures have been published by ebay seller who brought details including photographer so the picture must be published in the topic dedicated to the photographer.
And I also think it would be better to bring as further details about these photos

I completely agree and I've always been the first to support this little slap on the wrist. But this time I have been clueless and didnīt read the name of the photographer. Anyway, I have doubts that it was Stern. I apologize.

This is a photoshopped fake, and look at those hands! Definitely not Marilyn's hands or ring taste (oversized and gaudy). The face is from one of the "Ladies of the Chorus" pictures. Here is that face photo.

Hi there,
It was taken at the Sherry-Netherlands Hotel in 1952. Hope that helps! jumpymm.gif

Hi all,This is a repost from the last thread, just in case you haven't seen it already. And if you have any queries, please don't hesitate to ask on the forum as I'm sure our members will be able to help.On this note, let's get posting!Tara

Sorry, but I think you are being slightly over the top. I'd like to thank everyone who posts never before seen photos in this thread, because I simply don't have the time any more to look through 20+ threads every day searching for extremely rare images. Since this thread does exist, why not use it for its intended purpose...?

Ya, for newspaper clippings (which have pics), there are threads for that.
http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/?showtopic=10200&st=160

But what I do for all the different forum discussions, or photos and their topics, or mags topics, I create internet folders for each. So when I need to refer, I can see whats up.

It just takes awhile to understand how this forum works . MM has so many pics to sort. lol.

Ya, it has to be a different event. Here is also a pic with the different fur. And she is at the podium too. With some kind of raffle machine.

Eric Woodard wrote about her appearance on March 14, 1961 in an article published on examiner.com:
"March 14th Marilyn attends an Actor's Studio Benefit at the Roseland Dance City and gives out prizes for the raffle. According to Earl Wilson, she arrived and left alone. Most certainly, she and Lee Strasberg discussed the upcoming production, including Serling's first draft, casting and Lee's "vision." Reports have her dancing with Franchot Tone, who might have been under consideration for another part besides Davidson."

source: http://www.examiner.com/article/marilyn-monroe-and-rain-the-project-that-never-came-to-be-part-3

I wonder if the other fur may have been a prize in the raffle.

I don't know. But the pic with her standing at the table, and the man behind her holding that fur, as if to put it on her or after taking it off. The table doesn't show Lee or Anna Strasberg. Who both were sitting with MM at the Actor's Studio Benefit and can be seen in those pictures.

That's very interesting, thanks. I looked in the topic on this event, and there are photos of Marilyn (taken from a french documentary) in ginie's post on page 5 that show Marilyn with both the dark fur and the one she's holding and is being held behind her in the photo you posted.

I am sorry to have gotten so far off-topic here. Curiosity got the better of me again.

Well, then it must be the same event. The Fur may be another one she brought along to be raffled off or that she won. That is a mystery.

To me it is the premiere of the play Night Conversation Piece on 18 November 1957. The woman in the first photo is Joan Copland - Arthur's sister. That thread shows Marilyn wearing the same dress. And makes sense that Isadore is there too.

I think it's in 1953 because it's look likes to her hairstyle from RONR

More information from Heritage auctions http://entertainment.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=7082&lotIdNo=71001 :
A Marilyn Monroe Signed Black and White Photograph, Circa 1956. An original print with a matte finish, depicting the star in one of her most famous publicity poses, signed in blue ballpoint ink on the left side "To Joe / Love and Kisses / Marilyn Monroe;" the verso has a handwritten annotation in black ballpoint ink reading "Marilyn Monroe / Passed away 8/5/62." (Please note there is yellow staining on the right side at MM's shoulder and above it, there is wrinkling on three of the four corners, and there is a very small tear in the white margin on the middle right side but it does not go into the actual image.)
14" x 11"

PROVENANCE:
The "Joe" noted above was Joe Zable, a longtime security guard at 20th Century Fox who struck up a lasting, professional friendship with Monroe. His niece consigned this piece directly to Heritage Auctions and she remembers her uncle saying that Marilyn was "a gal for the ages" and that she was beautiful and always kind.

The dog was Norma Jeane's, a collie named Muggsie. When Norma Jeane's modelling career took off and she spent less time with the dog, Muggsie was said to have died of a broken heart. The kid might be a neighbour or relative of Jim Dougherty's?

YES CANDLE... I READ THAT WHEN I FOUND THE PICTURE......

Posted by: Candle Nov 13 2013, 12:44 AM

I believe the source of the photo to be Jim Dougherty. Might be from one of his two Norma Jeane related books "The Secret Happiness of Marilyn Monroe", or "To Norma Jeane with Love, Jimmie".

I don't own either book so cannot say for certain which it comes from, if any, but that picture shows up on many reputable Marilyn related websites, so stands a good chance of being Norma Jeane related. Who has Jim's books? Can you confirm the picture in question above of the child with the Collie dog?

I believe the source of the photo to be Jim Dougherty. Might be from one of his two Norma Jeane related books "The Secret Happiness of Marilyn Monroe", or "To Norma Jeane with Love, Jimmie".

This should probably be moved to Picture Investigations now as it is turning into a lengthy discussion (thanks administrators!). As a young girl, Norma Jeane had a dog named Tippy (see photo). It was given to her in 1932 by the Bolenders. Muggsie (a collie) was the dog Jim gave Norma Jeane when they were married. The dog is said to have died from a "broken heart" since Marilyn had little time for it once she started modelling. The years don't fit for the previous image posted so highly unlikely it is Norma Jeane.

Good plan to move it to the Picture Investigation forum. I must clarify though I earlier said the kid could be a neighbour or relative of Jim's. I in no way believe the kid to be Norma Jeane. And when I said the picture is Norma Jeane related, I am meaning the Collie dog to be (as in Muggsie given to Norma by Jim), and not the kid being Norma Jeane.

I have read about that murder, and it is Marilyn's great niece through her Mother's side.

You can watch the "48 Hours Mystery" episode about the murders here: http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=7414118n

About 15-20 mins of the episode is dedicated to Krystal and Marilyn is mentioned briefly near the beginning.

There's also a 2011 movie about the murders, "Texas Killing Fields": http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1389127/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Excuse you?? No need to be so RUDE!
Also, I recall an admin announce some time ago (and again in the last thread) that obviously not everything posted will be rare so it's OK to occassionally repost some photos that have appeared previously on rare photo threads... if not, these threads would not be very active. What's rare to someone else might not be rare to a "serious member". I mean really!
If we were down to posting only photos that have never EVER seen the light of day, we would not be on thread 26. So you need to CHILL OUT!

So I ask the admins to intervene on YOUR (typical) snobbery "We are fed up.." Who is this "we"??? And how could you ever be fed up with Marilyn?!

Sorry ladies!
You confuse ES as facebook or pinterest or tumblr...
Originally, this blog was created to share information, rare photos, investigations, sharing scans of books or magazines but not constantly publish pictures that we know or because you find them just beautiful! We don't need that here! Take the time to review and check all the posts and all new posts each days for do not to publish what has already been published!

Please read again what Tara (admisnistrator) wrote:
http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/index.php?s=&showtopic=18153&view=findpost&p=224331

Hi all,

I have said in the past that the occasional repeated photo is not such a big problem. However, when the Rare Pictures thread is continually flooded with multiple repeat posts this not only spoils the experience for members, it's also a huge waste of bandwidth. Furthermore, it creates a bad atmosphere. Myself and the other admins have stated countless times over the years that the Rare Pictures thread is only for the latest discoveries that can't yet be categorised. And yet, time and time again, it has been used - though unintentionally, I'm sure - as a random picture thread.

I don't believe Eric means to be rude, or snobbish. I think he is simply frustrated that the same problem keeps coming up, which I can readily understand. And if anyone is upset or annoyed by what I have to say, I'm truly sorry. Please understand that I don't wish to target anyone personally. But ES a user-led forum, not a social media site, and so once again I must ask you all to check through the current thread before you post, and if you know the photographer or event, please go to that thread. And if you're still not sure, try Picture Investigations. Rare Pictures is not a shortcut, or a last resort.

It may sound picky, but if we allow random posting to continue then it will spread across the site. As much as I value everyone's contributions, I also have to protect the integrity of this site. If you have any further questions, please contact myself or another mod privately.

Regards,
Tara

And I would add: it is impossible to follow all the publications, you know? People have their lives and have to work, study, take care of their families or themselves. This should be a place for the people who love Marilyn, and loving doesnīt mean renounce to your life and do nothing else as to be in everlasting Marilyn all day long, that would be just sick. Moreover we are talking from a person who died 51 years ago and whom unfortunately we cannot help anymore, no matter how much we disscuss her here. There are more important issues in life nowadays than yelling about some pictures being reposted. It is just out of respect for the fans who cannot be here all day and therefore donīt have your large knowledge of Marilyn pictures. I hope you can make your living out of that, or maybe you are rich or retired, lucky you.

Exactly, and of course he has been rude. Yelling: "We are tired of your posts!! " or "Where are the serious EVM" is rude enough. There are other ways of saying it. What if a member is new? Dos he or she have to spend a couple of years doing nothing else as watching all that has been posted? People have lifes, friends, works, studies, families. This shouldnīt be a place for people who only live for the site. We are here to share and enjoy Marilyn. And if for me a picture is rare and was posted last year in the thread "whatsover" , how are we supposed to know? Are we supposed to have a super memory and remember all the pictures we have seen before? I am sorry, but I donīt.
Of course I understand what the adm say, but it is impossible to control everything here at least on some membersī side.

One more thing I would like to add, some posters are adding pictures to the Rare thread, but don't think to add them to their respective already created Event category. This is happening more and more due to eBay sellers selling previously unseen pictures of Marilyn from known events she attended.

The result of adding those types of pictures to a Rare Picture thread and not their appropriate event thread? After time passes they get lost within pages and pages of Rare Picture threads, with no immediate reference to retrieve them. It is best to place them in the first place in their appropriate thread if you can.

Just a thought that this side of it needs to be looked at.

Posted by: MarilynDeLioncourt Nov 28 2013, 06:57 AM

I think to save on bandwidth we should start deleting posts and staff should privately message people.

Posted by: Tara Nov 28 2013, 12:49 PM

Hello again,

Thanks to Candle and Marilyn DeLioncourt for your thoughtful posts.

However, I'm disappointed that my previous warning was ignored by some others. Marilyn144, you have been warned before about making multiple random posts on this thread.

I have said before that the occasional repeat post is not the issue here. I understand that members have busy lives and don't have unlimited time for Marilyn. (This applies to mods too, by the way.) And I also understand that the definition of rare is highly subjective. However, the real problem lies with a minority of users who post without thinking. If you don't know where a picture belongs, there are better ways to find out than posting it randomly here.

After discussing this recurring problem with both Mels and Paju, I am closing this thread. Furthermore, there will be no more generalised 'rare pictures' threads. In future, the Rare Pictures forum is for specific topics only. Duplicate threads will be deleted without notice.

I apologise to all of you who have made positive contributions to this and previous threads. However, having tried many different approaches, we have decided that this is the only way forward.

Tara
