I found his grave site photo. I hadn't seen this before. Thought it would be neat to start this topic on her father...

Stanley Gifford
Original name: Charles Gifford

Birth: 1898
Death: 1965

Burial:
San Jacinto Valley Cemetery District
Hemet
Riverside County
California, USA

Folk Figure. He was the biological father of Marilyn Monroe. Charles Stanley Gifford began working with Gladys Monroe Baker, at Consolidated Films, after his wife, Lillian Priester, sued him for divorce. In her divorce petition, Lillian charged Gifford with addiction to narcotics, abuse and with associating with women of 'low character' Gifford, a hypershooter and developer at Consolidated, had began an affair with Gladys earlier that spring. It is believed that Gifford deserted her on Christmas Eve 1925 when she informed him of her pregnancy. Throughout her life Marilyn always believed that Gifford was her father. He settled in Gilman Hot Springs, Riverside County, California and became the owner of some cottage apartments. Stan moved to nearby San Jacinto where he was successful in founding and operating the Red Rock Dairy in the 1960s with a drive through window in the front where customers could obtain dairy products without getting out of their cars. According to employees, it seemed Marilyn would do just that on occasion while en route to Palm Springs, California, while riding in her chauffeur driven limo thus forcing the unbelieving father to fill her order.

Oh excellent reading Megan. Thank you very much. What a shame he did not stay around for Marilyn. It might have made all the difference in the world in her life.

But he never wanted to speak to her?

For a man that was never wound, he sure ruined her life, didn't he? (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/no.gif)

It wasn't ever proved though was it, that he was her father. It is so sad though, if it was him. What a sad situation for Gladys and later for Norma Jeane. How awful it must have been for Gladys trying to cope on her own in that day and age.

On his deathbed, Gifford told a priest that he was Marilyn's father. He said that Gladys had refused to let him go near her daughter after he left. And then when he married again, he didn't want to cause his family shame by admitting to having an illegitimate child.

Marilyn tried to contact him several times, but was turned away. When she was in hospital, a year before her death, Gifford tried to contact her. But she said it was too late.

PS I should add that this comes from a magazine article. I can't say how true it is, but it's as close as we'll ever get now.
