I don't remember the magazine this came from. If someone could translate the French for us, I'd appreciate it. At least just the important facts in the article.

Of course, I don't know. But I'd like to know that and if the man skating with Marilyn is Vic (aka Chic) Masi?!

Well, I can't stand the suspense any longer. My French is pretty bad, but I'm going to summarise what I understand of the article.
Dolores Hope Masi was named after Bob Hope's wife, Dolores. Her father, Vic Masi, was also known as Chic. The Masis were friends of Joe DiMaggio, who later became close to Marilyn as well. Vic was a small time actor - he later had a bit part in the 1965 film, '36 Hours'. He was also a chef, and worked in Puccini's restaurant, where he got to know Frank Sinatra. In 1952, Chic helped Marilyn learn to rollerskate for her part in 'Monkey Business'. After their marriage in 1954, Joe and Marilyn were officially resident at North Palm Drive, LA, and sometimes Joe's home in San Francisco. But Dolores says that they in fact stayed for long periods with the Masis at their home in Saloma Avenue, Sherman Oaks, thus avoiding the press. They even had their own bedroom there. Dolores was 9 years old at the time. Marilyn was wonderfully affectionate to her, calling her 'baby' and 'darling'. She also adored Joe Junior, treating him as if he was her own son. She was very generous to Marguerite Masi, giving her a Dior outfit and pearls from Japan. Family meals were a highlight. After Marilyn divorced Joe and married Arthur Miller, she lost touch with the Masis. Well, that's the best I can do. It would be so great if someone could give us a more complete translation ... Oh, thank you so much for that information. I thought they lived in San Francisco, not Sherman Oaks. Thanks for clearing that up.

QUOTE(chickeyonthego @ Dec 21 2005, 11:34 PM) Oh, thank you so much for that information. I thought they lived in San Francisco, not Sherman Oaks. Thanks for clearing that up. You're welcome Stacy. And I guess if the Masis already knew Bob Hope, that explains why Chic went to Korea with Marilyn. The pieces of the puzzle are coming together slowly ... Thanks Tara. (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) It all went well - better than I expected.
In 1954, everyone thought Marilyn and her new husband, baseball star Joe Di Maggio, were beginning their life as newlyweds in the privacy of their Beverly Hills home. But Dolores Hope Masi, the daughter of friends of the two stars, decided to break a silence of 50 years and reveal one of the least known pans? of Marilyn's life, or how the legendary movie star and her equally famous husband spent the majority of their marriage - which lasted only 9 months - with the Masis, in San Fernando Valley. According to Dolores, age 57, they hoped to find happiness and tranquility there, protected from the paparazzi. Dolores, who has the same name as her godmother, the wife of actor Bob Hope, remained quiet throughout the years as respect for Di Maggio - dead only 4 years ago - and for the memory of Marilyn Monroe, whom she considered a dear friend of the family and almost a second mother. "My parents never said anything about Marilyn. I now think it's important to talk about it because the only time she lead a normal life was when she was with us." Dolores' father, Victor Masi, was a close friend of the Di Maggio family and then became a close friend of the actress. Several people, throughout the years, pretended Marilyn and Joe met because of them, but according to Dolores, it was her father Victor - Vic, or Chic to close friends - who actually brought them together. When they began dating, Joe, who was timid, said one day to her father, "What do I do, Chic?" And he replied, "You should marry her, she's the most beautiful woman in the world, you mustn't ask yourself a hundred times." Victor (Chic) Masi was a Hollywood jack of all trades. He acted a bit, he cooked on sets. He also owned a restaurant and, for a year, he was the head of Frank Sinatra's "Puccini" trattoria in Beverly Hills. He was also a rollerskating referee and taught Marilyn how to skate for her role in "Monkey Business". According to Dolores, her father was also the star's official advisor (I'm not sure if that's the right word) for two years. "People around Marilyn tried to take advantage of her. She confided in my father. It was then that he started to help her, checking, for example, the contents of her contract." Well, I'm off to eat now. I promise to continue later. And please excuse my sometimes improper English. This post has been edited by Zelda Zonk: Aug 27 2006, 12:36 AM |

Marilyn and Joe's marriage was celebrated in the intimacy of San Francisco's city hall, on the 14th of January 1954. According to the official story, upon returning from their honeymoon, the famous newlyweds lived in San Francisco for a while. Marilyn reluctantly tried to be the housewife her husband sought. They moved to 508, North Palm Drive, in Beverly Hills, where the stormy relationship that we know of took place. But Dolores tells another story. "They came to live with us, on Saloma Avenue in Sherman Oaks before they got married, and stayed with us after their honeymoon and during their marriage." This seems incredible, but Dolores, who was 9 years old at the time, says that they felt better with the Masis, who were able to support and protect them. She adds, "Joe didn't want to be alone with her."
"We had a house with three rooms: my parents had one, I had mine and Joe and Marilyn shared the one near the front. We had only one bathroom. They wanted to flee from the media. We covered each window with blue drapes; this way, no one could see inside. But the media ended up finding out. They tried to take pictures and break in through the door, but were unsuccessful because my father was very uncompromising with them." Dolores remembers that, as a child, Joe and Marilyn's life seemed quite normal to her. The actress was part of the family. "In the morning, we ate breakfast all together. Usually, my mother made breakfast, but if Marilyn was the first to wake up, she prepared it. She and Mother were like sisters. They washed the dishes together; Marilyn always helped. Even without her hair fixed and wearing no makeup, she was always magnificent. Afterwards, she'd go the set, Joe went about doing his business, I went to school. In the evening, we ate dinner all together. Supper was important, because my father was a big cook. He made chicken parmesan or chicken cacciatore." "Marilyn was marvelous with me, very considerate," recalls Dolores, overwhelmed by emotions as we looked at old photos. "She called me Baby or Darling. I didn't realize at the time, but I think it was significant. She wanted to be a mother. She loved Joe Jr. as though he were her own son. He was three years old than I was and often came to our house to see his father. Marilyn told me that, one day, she and Joe would have children." Dolores also remembers Marilyn generosity; she gave her mother jewelry, a Dior dress and a bolero given to her by the Japanese government in 1954. "She was such a sweet person. One night, a cricket came into the house and I remember that I was screaming. She comforted me by saying it was one of God's creature and that we shouldn't cause it any harm. She took it and brought it outside. She had always thought that all life was precious. But she was often sad," adds Dolores who remembers the days when the movie icon was in so much despair she did not want to get out of bed. "Marilyn was madly in love with Joe and he was not a good husband; he constantly deceived? her, whereas she never deceived him. She would tell him: "I love you so much" and he replied "Yes, I know." " Well, I'll continue translating later, probably tomorrow. Thanks so much Alessia! I can't wait to read more! The last bit about Joe 'deceiving' Marilyn was a bit odd. I guess what Dolores meant was that whereas Marilyn was open about her love for Joe, he found it hard to express his feelings for her.

---------- When I read this part it touches me deeply. How much Marilyn tried to protect every shape of life, expressed openly her feelings yet not getting back same kind of openly showed love.Maybe she din't even expect it from her men?Yet I have grown to think that even though DiMaggio couldn't be as open about his feelings (as MM) he really loved Marilyn.Maybe he was a little bit of ashamed of Marilyn and her manners, open feelings, open sexuality, need to put her man up on a pedestal.Maybe he grew up to love her deeper, more "free way" after divorce. Those days I think men were not supposed to show their feelings but instead to be silent and strong.Well,or at least DiMaggio seemed to have been that type. Thank you,Alessia for seeing the trouble of translating this article for us. This post has been edited by rose: Aug 27 2006, 05:38 PM |

Tara, it might sound a bit odd because I didn't translate it properly...I don't think deceive is exactly the best word. I've only got about one page left and I'll finish it up later today. |
