--------

For the first time, the National Portrait Gallery and the BBC present an exhibition and series that have been jointly developed by the two organisations. The World's Most Photographed is an integrated project consisting of an exhibition of around 100 photographs and an accompanying BBC Two series exploring the lives and legends of ten well-known figures from history - Muhammad Ali, James Dean, Mahatma Gandhi, Greta Garbo, Audrey Hepburn, Adolf Hitler, John F. Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and Queen Victoria.

By unearthing photographs which have previously been lost, suppressed and hidden, together with more familiar images, the exhibition and series explore the nature of celebrity and iconography, going beyond the often carefully constructed public image to reveal much more about their personalities and lives.

Highlights include:

Marilyn Monroe How the first American goddess used photography to create a phenomenon, how a single image threatened to destroy her, and how for one day in New York, it showed her at her happiest

3 August BBC2 7:30pm

I have included just the info on the Marilyn part, but it looks like a great series. For more info, and news of an accompanying exhibition including a 1962 portrait of MM by Bert Stern, visit the National Portrait Gallery website - click here

I've just found out that this week's TV Times has an article on Marilyn, to tie in with the documentary. I bought the magazine today, a nice double-page spread but no info or rare pics ...

Review
This is a very enjoyable and well-made documentary charting Marilyn Monroe's love affair with the camera. I found the interviews with Bruce Davidson and George Barris very moving. They seem like kind, sensitive men and I feel Marilyn would have been at her ease with them.

It was also interesting to hear from Sam Shaw's children. Did you know his son Larry was an assistant on the SYI photo shoot? Or that Sam once found Marilyn bathing in a tub filled with icecubes?

Conover, De Dienes and Kelley are also mentioned. Of the major photographers, Greene and Stern weren't covered - but then I don't like Stern much anyway!

Overall: 4 out of 5 Stars (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/thumbup1.gif)

It was a nice documentary with a lot of accurat info for a change (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/wink3.gif) but what really stunned me was that there was no mention of Milton Greene (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/shock.gif) (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) !! How is this possible (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/hmm.gif) ? I think Milton has been a major photographic influence on MM and her career but the documentary didn´t even talk about them starting MM-Productions which enabled MM to control most of her photographic images, something really unique for a moviestar at that time (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/photo.gif) !! Maybe it has to do with copyrights and the MHG-Archives not giving permission to use any of Milton´s photos (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/huh.gif) ? It makes the documentary less complete in my opinion (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/blush.gif) .

I thought this was a really good documentry, and it's nice to see new interviewees as so often its just the same bits of footage. I agree about the Greene thing though, I was waiting for them to mention him but it didn't happen.

Good though (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I agree, Greene was such a strong influence on Marilyn. I feel that, creatively, they had the same vision. 'Marilyn In Manhattan' covers their relationship really well.

I really enjoyed watching this one. Oh so short though, 30 mins I think. I was like 'Blimey they missed this and this' but I think they had to be selective due to the lack of time. The overall feeling of the show was stylish and not put together like many documentaries as an afterthought or to make a quick buck. Greene was the glaring omission though maybe there were legal reasons for this? Who knows, but it was well worth watching. James Haspiel seems to be doing the rounds a bit these days. If only they had nabbed some of his unseen home movie footage to show, but I guess that would have gone against the whole title of the series! Overall A for effort.
