I quite agree with your analysis, Zelda, combined with the fact that Marilyn was naturally shy about expressing her feelings in public.
Attached some rare moments in colour, filmed during the day. This is in the generic of a dedicated program about Khrushchev's visit to US, that was shown on TV tonight, in France.

You know, I was just wondering... I donīt understand why in 1959 she needed to play that role yet. I mean, Susan Strasberg also said something similar "she didnīt need all that, she had already demonstrated she was a good actress " , and I would add: a business woman. Ok, this was 1959, but we have seen Marilyn as an intelligent, sure, witty woman in interviews as the one in LA airport for Bus Stop, and later her last interview for life. This woman in the clip was another woman, I donīt know why she went on playing the "dumb blonde" ( hope no one jumps down on me, thatīs what from my point of view she is playing in this interview, and I say "playing" not being). She didnīt need that anymore, I think. it is like going back again. I have the same feeling with some of her public appearences in 1962 (the Golden Globe Awards with Bolaņos) . It is as if , once she had lost Arthur Miller she didnīt trust herself anymore, it is just a feeling and I might be wrong, but somehow I think she went backwards regarding her public appearence. She was trying to be taken seriously, what she absolutely deserved, but she played just the opposite sometimes. I find it such a pitty. I am sure she was so much interesting being herself !! And I guess it took so much of her energy, to be constantly playing this role, it must have been imposible to go on. I just canīt imagine to carry on such a weight. Seems to me that there was something she was trying not to give away. Her personal feelings for views on communism? the Soviets? I don't know. She definitely wanted to not be pushed into saying something. Only she knew what. |

An episode of American Experience on Khrushchev's tour of the US in 1959. MM is in the shows logo. And short footage of MM starts around 21:20, and some later on hearing the speech. Watch below.
PBS AMERICAN EXPERIENCE - Cold War Roadshow Aired: 11/18/2014 51:47 In the fall of 1959, at the height of the Cold War, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev toured the United States for 12 days at the invitation of President Dwight Eisenhower. For both men, the visit was an opportunity to halt the escalating threats of the Cold War and potentially chart a new course toward peaceful coexistence. For the American press, it was the media blockbuster story of the year. http://video.pbs.org/video/2365371601/ This post has been edited by meganmarilyn: Jan 11 2015, 06:44 AM
