Does anyone have any photos of MM with Slatzer besides the one I have posted here? I've seen others (and in color). If so, please post them!

I don't like Slatzer either. Come on, Marilyn was nice for him and agreed to pose with him on a few pictures, and then the man goes on telling about how they had an affair (and a short marriage!) together. Yuck (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/mf_tongue.gif)
I think we have officially nicknamed him "The Toad" (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/laughing.gif)
But Marilyn looks beautiful in these pics (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I agree with you on this Nathalie. If you look on the pics Jimmy Haspiel made (and he's on a view together with her) and the ones of Marilyn with Slatzer together, I would def. say that the photos look like that there are friends pictured together.

I only say this because the photos look to me like that

To my shame I have never read a Slatzer book but I do know about his claims. However, have the claims ever been entirely discredited? Just because something is unlikely does not mean it did not occur, and why do you call him the toad? Is it purely because he is not particularly photogenic and overweight or are there more reasons? Please enlighten me further.

Robert Slatzer wrote a book called "The Life And Curious Death Of Marilyn Monroe" published in 1974. Although the book is of value to fans, much of what is in the book that isn't common knowledge or verifiable through public records, seems to be fabrication.

One reason people think this is because Slatzer uses long word for word quotes of conversations he claims to have had twenty years earlier with Marilyn. Who remembers paragraph after paragraph of quotations from conversations that took place twenty years ago?

Slatzer claims to have met MM in the summer of 1946 at 20th Century Fox. He said MM introduced herself to him as Norma Jeane Mortensen. He says they dated the evening of the day they met and that the date included a nude swim on the beach. He also claims they lived together for a time and even spent a day working in the fields for a days wages picking cotton or strawberries (I can't remember which) when they were hard up for money.

He also claims that he dated Marilyn for the next six years (as she was becoming famous and even during her romance with Joe DiMaggio). The "romance" did not receive much press. There is one mention of the romance in a Dorothy Kilgallen gossip column from August of 1952: "A dark horse in the Marilyn Monroe romance derby is Bob Slatzer, former Columbus, Ohio, literary critic. He's been wooing her by phone and mail and improving Her Mind [sic] with gifts of the world's greatest books."

Robert Slatzer also claims that he (and not Joe DiMaggio) is Marilyn's second husband. He says that he and MM were married secretly in Tijuana, Mexico. The alleged marriage ended three days later (according to Slatzer) when 20th Century Fox got wind of it. Slatzer claims that he and MM went back down to Mexico and paid money to the attorney who married them and the attorney then destroyed the wedding license. Slatzer claims, "Back then, you could pay the attorneys $100.00 or so, and they would do that."

Slatzer claims that MM was murdered and has implicated John F. Kennedy and Robert Kennedy as being involved with Marilyn's murder. It is his involvement in the Kennedy conspiracy cottage industry that makes Slatzer seem truly unsavory, because he has made money from perpetuating his fabrications and has implicated the Kennedys in Marilyn’s death, when there is ample evidence to the contrary. I recommend that Marilyn fans (especially murder conspiracy theorists) read Donald Spoto’s biography of Marilyn’s life. Although he isn’t necessarily always right, (I don’t agree with everything Spoto says about Anthony Summers or Dr. Ralph Greenson) Spoto does a good job exposing Robert Slatzer, Jeane Carmen, James Haspiel, Milo Speriglio, Lionel Grandison (who was convicted of forgery) and the rest of the Kennedy conspiracy theorists. Spoto explains that the motive for making and cheerfully corroborating each other’s wild allegations was money and notoriety.

From this point, I will quote "The Marilyn Encyclopedia" by Adam Victor:

"Slatzer's critics, and they are many, say that Slatzer is simply a world class fantasist, who turned a passing acquaintance with Marilyn during the shoot on Niagara (1953) into a lifetime career. The sole piece of evidence Slatzer offers in "The Life And Curious Death Of Marilyn Monroe" is a photograph of him and Marilyn against the backdrop of Niagara Falls, on which appears the inscription, 'To Bob, Luck & Love, Marilyn.' Donald Spoto, who has provided the most compelling debunking of Slatzer's claims so far, [in his biography "Marilyn Monroe, A Biography"] notes that Marilyn wrote far more personal dedications to people who were important to her. It would have been quite possible for Slatzer to have taken the photographs and then sent them to her, care of the studio, requesting her to autograph them."

"Slatzer has claimed that throughout Marilyn's life he was party to her most intimate secrets. However, none of Marilyn's entourage – except Allan "Whitey" Snyder, who contributed an ambiguous quote to Slatzer's book that "Bob and Marilyn's long relationship was an unusual one, a good one, one that I feel was good for the both of them." – has ever acknowledged that they knew him, and Slatzer's name did not appear in any of Marilyn's numerous personal address books"

Now I switch from Adam Victor back to my own explanation of why Slatzer is not credible:

Slatzer claims that a boxer friend of his was a witness to his marriage to Marilyn. The boxer (nicknamed "Kid" something or other) initially backed Slatzer. However, he later admitted that he had lied for Slatzer because he needed money. Not a good sign in Slatzer's favor.

Slatzer also claims to have interviewed Pat Newcomb for his book. However, Pat Newcomb told Donald Spoto she had never met him. (More evidence that Slatzer has been dishonest.)

But there is more...

In Chapter 23, of "Goddess: The Secret Lives Of Marilyn Monroe" Anthony Summers mentions an article that came out in a magazine early in the Monroe/Miller marriage about Marilyn's involvement with Robert Slatzer. The story reportedly included photos. Summers goes on to say Marilyn called Slatzer to tell him her husband was upset. The source notes in Goddess say the magazine was the May 1957 issue of "Confidential" and that Anthony Summers' source for this information was Robert Slatzer, who was corroborated by the magazine.

There was indeed and article in 1957 (while Marilyn was still alive). The article says nothing about a marriage, it does detail that MM and Slatzer met and knew one another and then Slatzer goes on to discuss a romp on a couch etc.

A friend explained to me his take on the article:

First off, there seems to be a lot of evidence that the two did in fact know each other, if even very slightly. The time period would be around the filming of Niagara. The one thing to keep in mind however is that even if the two did know each other, you can bet once that “Confidential” issue hit the stands Marilyn would never have spoken to the guy again. She was extremely private and had cut friends off in the past for talking about her or her private life.

To have a friend have an article in “Confidential” that insinuated a sexual romp would have really [angered Marilyn]. [Marilyn and Arthur fired the butler and maid who revealed the décor of their cottage while shooting “The Prince and The Showgirl”] If nothing else, for me, this article would lead me to believe that Marilyn would have never spoken to the man again, let alone have him as a confidante during the last summer of her life, telling him things she would not tell anyone else. As for Whitey's intro to Robert Slatzer's book, didn't he later say that he wrote it but didn't know Slatzer and took Slatzer's word that he was a good friend of Marilyn's? And later disavowed the book?

So there you have it.

Slatzer in a nutshell.

To Fav: I don't call him the toad because of his looks (I never do that, because I know how much it can hurt people and I don't think I can judge anyone by their looks - I'm not pretty myself), but because of his stories. I have to admit that I haven't read Slatzer's books (I'd like to, just to see exactly what he writes), but I've read what he says and also how the things he has said have been proven to be the kind you can doubt to be true. I simply don't understand how he could make a career of making stories about Marilyn and him having a deep relationship, when it probably was just that they met briefly and were acquantaices.
To Mike: Thank you for the explanation you wrote. I really enjoyed reading it.

The reason no one believes Slatzer's story, in my view, is if he spent so much time with her, especially in her early days from 1946 on, there would be more photographs. She was a top pinup model in the late 40's, and the publicity machine around her was like no other. Everyone she was with, photos were taken. Every function she was at, every event she hosted or took part of, whatever the place was, cameras were snapping.

You would think that Slatzer himself would have taken his own personal photographs of her if this romance was going on. Any photograph showing them together at any time other than Niagara Falls 1952.

Ok, slatzer is a Liar.....plain and simple. (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/angry.gif)
He claimed to have lived with Marilyn in an apt. in 1949.....comon now!.....he claims he married Marilyn the summer of 1952 in Mexico when there exists a check signed by Marilyn that very same weekend, shopping in L.A.
Furthermore, Slatzer sold his story to the tabloids in the late 1950's....believe me, anything resembling a relationship between Slatzer and Monroe would have been severed right there.
Then he claimed that he was Marilyn's "best friend" and she told him in 1962 that she was going to give a Pressconference on the kennedys (not Marilyn's style..she was ultra private)....and he knew about her "red diary" (that never surfaced and was never seen by anybody else credible...hmmmmm...)
The Man that served as a 'witness' to the mexico nuptials later admitted that he lied for Slatzer because he felt 'sorry for him'......interesting.
Nobody in Marilyn's circle ever saw Slatzer around Marilyn....i think there would be a record of the man had he been truly marilyn's "best friend" (there is one of Ralph Roberts, a close friend to Marilyn)....
Slatzer has a handful of Pics taken while on Location in Niagara...he was simply in the right place at the right time and he took those pics and made a career out of it.
It is a shame.
The Kennedy rumour mill and a lot of other conspiracy type stuff was started or continued by Slatzer's lies and he is directly responsible for obstructing the truth about Marilyn...he did her no favors.
he is a disgrace. (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/no.gif)

I would not have thought Whitey to write anything about Marilyn in any book without known it's author. ????

I read the same sotry in the book written by David Marshall
Snyder explains that he wrote this note but he never met Slatzer and he adds that for him that Slatzer was not a close friend of Marilyn
He adds also that he perceived a pay for that

Robert Slatzer's wife laughs anytime her husband talk about his marriage with MM. I have read this info, in the Spoto's Biography... of course, Slatzer is a liar and I think...Shut up!!! (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/nono.gif)
