Artichokedom’s truest and grandest claim to fame is that Marilyn Monroe was first Artichoke Queen in Castroville, California. Although there were plenty of artichokes in Castroville in February 1948, there was no Castroville Artichoke Festival when Miss Monroe began her promising movie career with 20th Century Fox. Marilyn was in Salinas and Castroville to promote diamond sales for a local jewelry store and to generate publicity for her own budding career.
It all began when Jim Seedman and Stan Seedman decided to put on a "diamond" promotion in their respective jewelry stores. Jim owned Carlyle's Jewelry stores in Salinas and Stan owned a jewelry store in Hollywood. They were partners in both jewelry stores.
Stan happened to have a diamond salesman from Los Angeles who also worked as part-time movie star promoter. When the Seedmans decided to have their major diamond sale, they took advantage of this connection and opted to have a starlet they originally lined up, one Doreen Nash. Nash cancelled out at the last minute, so the promoter/diamond salesman picked a young, up-and-coming blonde with a stage name "Marilyn Monroe". Stan Seedman then brought her to Salinas for a week of public relations for the diamond sale in Salinas. She stayed in Salinas at the old Jeffery Hotel. as things developed, they ended up with a free day on Thursday. Stan went to the Thursday meeting of the Kiwanis in Salinas. He sat next to Randy Barsotti, who was the manager of the local Bank of American branch. Stan mentioned to Randy that he was hosting this starlet and they had a free day. Randy suggested that he and Stan take her to visit his friend at Cal Choke for a photo session. They did. They took some photos of her with some of the chokes and some of the growers. Randy suggested that they call her the Artichoke Queen, and it stuck! Likely they had no idea that this beauty would attain legendary status. Luckily for us, she did - and the legend continues.
Seedman vividly recalls Miss Monroe's visit and the profound impact the beautiful young starlet had on a star-struck city. Artichokes were big but young Marilyn was bigger. The jewelry store first modestly ordered 200 photographs of Miss Monroe to autograph in the Main Street store, but the number quickly proved inadequate for crowd of fans that included high school boys ditching school and mothers with suckling babies. "We didn’t know how big this was going to go," an exasperated Seedman exclaimed. More photos were quickly ordered and "before the week was over we had given out well over 1,000 of them." No one today can recollect how many diamonds were sold that day but the unique publicity stunt remains one of Artichokedom’s greatest folklore.
Miss Monroe attracted crowds so large the small city of Salinas’ police was beefed up with the forced special assignment of two patrolmen just to direct the crazed traffic in front of the store. "We were never so jammed in our lives," an obviously impressed but overwhelmed Seedman admitted. Prior to this the artichoke was often ignored in the grocers' shelf. Suddenly artichokes were everywhere with special tributes and recognition hitherto unknown.
During her brief but glamorous Salinas stay, Miss Monroe seductively selected the lucky winning name in a drawing at the Vogue Theater (now the Globe) for a fabulous $250 diamond ring.

(I am confused. Here in this article it says the event took place in 1947. So, did it take place in feb 1948 as stated earlier, or was it in 1947?)

http://www.beachcalifornia.com/castrov.html

Castroville, California is the Artichoke Center of the World. If you don't believe it, just look around!

This small town lies in the heart of California's Central Coast farm country less than 100 miles from San Francisco and less than three miles from the Pacific Ocean and public beaches. Prime land less than 3 miles from the beach and 10 miles from Salinas in Monterey County is blessed with the perfect climate for growing artichokes. For over 50 years, this "Artichoke Capital of the World" has celebrated harvests of their number one crop with an Artichoke Festival held usually in May.

In 1947 a young woman named Norma Jean was crowned Castroville's first artichoke queen. She later was known as the famous actress, Marilyn Monroe. John Steinbeck graced the town in a different manner, by using it as the setting for his short story, Johnnie Bear.

Stop at one of the artichoke restaurants and dine on farm fresh produce, including some of the biggest artichokes available on the planet! Billed as the World's Largest Artichoke, Castroville is home to a sculpture commissioned in 1963 for a roadside stand and restaurant owned by Ray Bei. Built from concrete and rebar, this giant creation stands 20 feet tall and 12 feet across. Today you can still see the giant artichoke in front of The Giant Artichoke, 11261 Merritt St., Castroville, CA. Phone: 831-633-3501.

Castroville (population 6,724 ) is located along the coast beside Monterey Bay. Here the ideal combination of soil, sun and fog provide the perfect growing conditions for artichokes, making Castroville the Artichoke Capital. There's an annual Artichoke Festival and parade, and Marilyn Monroe was crowned the very first Artichoke Queen in 1947.

If you look at the ticket stub for Carlyle's that you posted earlier, it says Friday, February 20.

Now, February 20th was on a Friday in 1948 but not in 1947, why we can assert that this event took place in 1948, and not in 1947.

"In 1948, MM came here to help promote a diamond sale at Carlyle's Jewelers, 362 Main St. The store had hired a starlet named Noreen Nash, but Nash had to cancel.

So Monroe filled in.

On that trip, she checked into a room at the Jeffrey Hotel in the 200 block of Main Street.

Before her abrupt arrival, she'd been baking in the sun in Palm Springs. Her nose had burned. It had begun to peel. Still, Marilyn showed up. She stood behind the counter at Carlyle's.

Patrons squeezed in. Marilyn flashed her brilliant smile. She chatted in an amiable way and autographed pictures of herself.

That day, the jewelry store sold lots of diamonds."

According to the Castroville website, the first Artichoke Festival was held in 1948, when Marilyn was its queen.

Noreen Nash, pic of the actress who cancelled at the last minute and thus Marilyn became her replacement.

Info below says Doreen (mispelled).

And according to IMDB, Noreen had a minor but uncredited role in "We're Not Married".

Last Summer I spent a week with Lois Banner. We picked up Noreen Nash from her Beverly Hills Mansion and we went to Marilyn's Memorial together. Miss Nash spoke about Marilyn. She was married to Dr. Lee Siegel, the 20th Century Fox doctor. After the memorial we drove to a gallery in Beverly HIlls and visited and had a light lunch. Lois took my photo with Miss Nash and her daughter, whose father was Stuart Whitman. If the photo looks blurry, blame the champagne. ha It was a very fun day.

Didn't see this one posted.

From Profiles in History auction, stating this was dated 1948-02-20. Which puts it in the timeframe from this event.
