You probably have already noticed that the various users listed at the bottom of the main forum page are displayed with various colours.

I'm talking about this line of text:

The answer to this is pretty simple: a different colour has been assigned to each member group.

Regular members appear in black.
Active members (ie. members who have over 50 posts) appear in blue. These members have a little more options than regular members: they can set their own title (it appears above their avatar on all their messages), they can upload their own avatar themselves, they can upload their personal picture to their profile, and they can attach images to their PMs.
Moderators appear in orange.
Administrators appear in green.
