Well this isn't really trivia but as I was reading thru my fave book "The Ultimate Look At The Legend" I spotted a couple of things that I didn't know and never noticed previously so I thought I'd share it with you guys and ladies:
1. Marilyn used to go out with her chauffeur and hair-dresser Peter Leonardi to the Bowery. Marilyn (in disguise) would walk along the streets, handing out money to the poor people living there. Now the interesting thing about this is that the only money Marilyn would have max is $40 8-O - $40 spending money allowance was given to her by Milton Greene every week. The rest of her money was totally under Greene's control so everytime she would run out of money, she'd have to wait till next week's allowance to pay back Peter or if she wanted to buy anything for herself (Greene covered her rent, groceries, etc.)! This totally shocked me, now I know that Milton was a business partner of hers but I never knew that he had that tight of a hold over MM's finance... MM obviously wasn't greedy about money and trusted Greene a lot! 2. Marilyn used to go to the end of 58th Street New York and meet a couple of young boys who trapped brids to sell them at a meat market for 50 cents a piece. Now instead of handing the birds over to be slaughtered for food, MM would pay these boys to release the birds... 3. If you watch the Happy Birthday clip in any documentary, Peter Lawford introduces MM several times before she actually comes out. Now this adds to the well-known myth that she was completely drunk and wasted and that night so that it took several calls before she could actually come out on stage. It not true though, MM didn't appear earlier because she WASN'T supposed to appear! The earlier intro's were supposed to tease the audience for the grande finale: Marilyn and the Happy Birthday Cake! The gag was all supposed to be for fun and was INTENTIONAL! The whole drunk story I guess just sounded better to those who wanted to depict MM as an out of control diva. Also, Marilyn was hardly dead-drunk considering how she was responsible for keeping her 80+ year-old father-in-law Isadore Miller company and bringing him home after the party. 4. To those of us who has a "tick", I thought it was rather surprising that MM herself had one! According to Haspiel, MM's tick was that when she opened the door at 155 East 93rd Street, the first thing she would do after stepping out of it, every time, as she stepped out on to the street, she would cup her hand in front of her mouth and cough into it, then she would look up. You could count on this, you could bet the house on it... according to Mr. Haspiel (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/laughing.gif) I just thought that was too cute! Okay this is all for now, I'll add more later (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) [/b] |

I'm a vegetarian and a bit of an animal rights activist (meaning I donate money to various charities; anti-bullfighting, pet shelters, anti-fur organizations, et cetera), and I read in another biography that she would sometimes order whoever drove her to stop on the side of the road when she spotted a wounded animal. She probably got ridiculed for it, especially then, but I admire that. She seemed to care a lot about creatures weaker than her, no doubt because she recognized something and thought she could ease their suffering somewhat. [PS -- I know she often wore fur coats, but I justify that for myself by thinking it was the times; things were different then.] |

I agree about the coats Zebo - I think it was the times. Of course, while maybe I'd get how a fur coat would look nice, what was the deal with the little...I don't know what to call them, stoles was it? You know, when a dead animal - i.e. a fox - would be laid around their shoulder. In its entirety. WIth its whole bosy, face, tail, everything! That always kind of freaks me out...
ANyway, before I got out on this tangent, I was going to welcome you Zebo. (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/bye1.gif) I'm sure you're going to be very happy here, and be someone who posts and joins in discussions and stuff [some people just join for pics - which isn't bad or anything, but it's nice to actually talk to people!] So welcome welcome welcome! Aww those little trivia facts are so sweet (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/smile1.gif) MM was a caring person (bird thing) and a real, "ordinary" person (she had that tick). I didn't know that money thing before! 8-O And I didn't know about the b-day thing either! In fact, all this stuff was new to me... I know barely anything about Marilyn Monroe. I saw a few of her movies and see her pics. I joined to know more. I heard that Marilyn died in a car accident then was told that she was found in her bed. Some say she committed suicide others say she was murdered. But I thought it was nice she cared for the poor and for the birds.

This really isn't topic related, but Jayne Mansfield is the actress that tragically died in a car accident. Marilyn was in bed, and yes, theories are like cell phones (everybody has one). This post has been edited by wootness: Apr 29 2005, 02:41 AM |

I was reading in a Audrey Hepburn bio that Marilyn was chosen to play Holly Golightly, in Breakast at Tiffany's, but some how they dropped her and added Audrey. I forgot who said it, but he said Marilyn was right for the part and Audrey wasn't.

Sh'ayn, I think the man you are talking about is Truman Capote, the writer of Breakfast at Tiffany's. (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
