As many of you dear Marilyn fans know, the early 1970s was a period when there were all sorts of efforts to capitalize on Marilyn the "legend." Attached are some screenshots from a fascinating 60 Minutes segment hosted by Mike Wallace, which aired in July 1973 on CBS-TV. The segment was about the publication of Norman Mailer's controversial biography Marilyn, and was aptly titled "Norman Mailer and the Fast Buck." The author's unabashedly-commercial motives and his lack of proper research were profiled for the TV audience---in fact, Wallace tells Mailer, straight up, that his biography isn't a good one! Also included are snippets of interviews with photographer Lawrence Schiller and Marilyn's housekeeper/companion Eunice Murray---who very sweetly but emphatically rejected claims in Mailer's book. Just thought I'd share, since it looks at Marilyn through the lens of commercialization in the publishing industry, which is interesting as far as TV documentary segments go.
