Does anyone know if the Ladies Home Journal interview with Marilyn from 1961, not published at the time, was ever printed? I had a feeling it was featured in LHJ during the 1970s but I can't seem to find it on here. The journalist was called Margaret Parton I think, and she said the magazine vetoed the article because it was too sympathetic. She also said she expected Marilyn to be like a peacock, ie vain, but she was more like a sick canary. Any help appreciated - thanks!

Thanks Stacy, much appreciated!

Hi Tara,

Unfortunately I can't provide a readable article for you, but I found that the Margaret Parton interview was published in the 19 February 1979 LOOK magazine as these only thumbnail sized pics show. Maybe someone else can post a full size scan for us.

Do you happen to know the exact date of the interview?

Lasse

Thanks Lasse! At least we know now that the article has been printed, and where. And I'll have a look into when the interview took place.

EDIT: According to Fred Lawrence Guiles in Legend, the interview was in mid-March of 1961, when Marilyn was recovering at home in New York from her hospital ordeal. Margaret Parton expected Marilyn to be late, but she was punctual. Before the interview, Pat Newcomb asked Mrs Parton not to question Marilyn about her past. Marilyn talked about her plans to film Rain for television, she was very enthusiastic and mentioned that Somerset Maugham thought her ideal for the role. Her famous quote about Sadie Thompson came from this interview: 'She was a girl who knew how to be gay, even when she was sad.'

Look, February 19, 1979

What is interesting is that the article seemed to have been published at an earlier date with a postscript by Miss Parton. That is where the quote about Marilyn having strength instead of weakness must be.
This edition does not have the postscript, just the original article. There was an advertisement page that ran old article on the bottom of the page. Another mystery for us to uncover.

What a beautiful article. That's what I love most about MM, she wasn't afraid to pour her heart out, no matter what. And this was rejected by the Ladies Home Journal for being to sympathetic or personal? I just loved reading how she grew up pretending and playing games with her childhood friends. I can picture tears in her eyes as she said those things. Then how she loved listening to the radio and shows like The Lone Ranger, because of the drama and excitement. Amazing interview. Such depth, I could listen to her all day! (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/throb.gif)

We now have the magazine, for 2 photos of MM that had been circulating here for some time!
This is a Photocrime Picture Story starring Marilyn Monroe, Cesar Romero, Donna Hamilton.
3 pages, with Monroe supposedly in 3 photos. (2 pages shown)

Marilyn (Adele Jordan) and Donna Hamilton (Sue Jordan) are cousins of Cesar Romero (Ken Cody).
Did my best to translate the story on page 1...

Photocrime 'Murder In Disguise'

1 - Ken Cody hides out with his cousins, Sue and Adele Jordan, after pulling a $45,000 hold-up. He tells them he's just returned from a business trip in Brazil. "And," he says, "I can't wait to get rid of this beard. All the way up on the plane, I kept thinking about shaving it off." He tells the girls to go downstairs and fix him something to eat.

2 - While waiting for Ken to appear, Adele hears a radio description of a bearded gunman. "That sounds like Ken," she says, "A beard and the kind of suit he was wearing." Suddenly she suggests a plan to Sue. "We could never get away with it, Sue," she adds. "But we could, if we got the suitcase and hid it." Sue is reluctant, but she finally agrees to co-operate.

Marilyn is then seen on next page by a ladder pointing up to the room.

It is interesting that is came out less than a week after her option was dropped by Columbia.

Although they are listed as the "cast from 20th Century's Deep Waters," none of them were actually in it. Henry King did direct it. Another mystery why, like in "Strictly for Kicks," Marilyn was listed as being at 20th Century, instead of Columbia.
