I just wondered how many hairdressing Geek's are on ESC, i myself have been in this profession for 5yrs now and i love using proclere's powder for bleaching hair on my clients, i had been told on another site that this bleach was also used on her hair.

I was looking at Marilyn's hair in some books i have, and i was interested in knowing more on what type of bleach her hairstylist used on Marilyn back in the 1960's.

I read about how they used to use flakes... I think it was Lux flakes?

I know they had Clairol bleach back then too.

But she was often wearing a wig towards the end of her life. In some extreme close ups you can actually see the lace front.

But as to specific brand for sure, I couldn't say. I'm sure someone here knows!

Hi Cello

I knew she did wear a wig for The Misfits, but what about the last few photo shoot's she had done with Bert stern, after many years of her bleaching her hair it didn't seem that damaged by looking at some picture's close up?

May be here: http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/?showtopic=9559
and here: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showpo...p;postcount=349 :
Bio, http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000054/bio.
"Tried 9 different shades of blond hair color before settling on platinum."

Marilyn Monroe 1962 Life Magazine Interview, http://the-lovely-marilyn-monroe.pop...ew-1962-675387.

I found this, http://entertainment.howstuffworks.c...arly-life4.htm on Marilyn Monroe's hair in the early years of her career. There is a tidbit on Marilyn Monroe's natural colour and texture, by the hair stylist who first lightened her hair, and it matches the information below, by a hair stylist who worked on her hair later in her career.
"Tint technician Sylvia Barnhart and shop owner Frank immediately set out to straighten Norma Jeane's hair, which Barnhart has described as "brown and kinky." The strong solution used in the process also lightened her hair, giving it a reddish-blonde cast".

This, http://dariandarlingnyc.blogspot.com...ic-blonde.html makes sense, and is the link that was first quoted from here in this thread, by Kyaatje, http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/...3&postcount=19.
The link has great pictures of Marilyn Monroe with various shades of blonde hair. "her hair is naturally so curly that to build a coiffure for her I have to first give her a straight permanent." - Gladys Rasmussen, Marilyn's long time hairdresser"

Perm solution has often been used to straighten hair. It can be combed through the hair and the hair is not set on perm rods or it can be set on large perm rods. Perm solution is commonly neutralized with a hydrogen peroxide solution, See "Modern Perms", http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perm_(hairstyle) and "Perming Hair" by P&G, http://www.pgbeautygroomingscience.c...ming-hair.html, so that would account for the reddish tint on Marilyn Monroe's brown hair, which was later bleached and toned blonde.

Hair stylist George Masters is credited with changing Marilyn Monroe's hair colour to what was named "pillow case white", http://www.beverlyhillstimesmagazine...jill-garneski/.

When Marilyn Monroe died, her cosmetics and personal items were auctioned off. Here is a website with pictures of what cosmetics she used at the time before she died, http://tiannemarie.blogspot.com/2010...f-marilyn.html.
"There a little bits of hairs stil stuck in the curlers ... she did own a couple of boxes of Wella's Kolesteral Creme tubes ... Marilyn's hair was extremely processed and brittle from the bleach. Kolesteral was meant to condition..."

Certain cosmetics sold for $3900.00 USD in one lot, #3030, in 2008, http://www.bonhams.com/cgi-bin/publi...&iSaleNo=16091.
"A Marilyn Monroe set of Erno Lazlo make-up products and hair conditioner, circa 1962
Two jars of the fancy brand MM used exclusively towards the end of her life; one labeled "Active pHelityl Cream" and the other "Face Powder Duo-pHase / Shade Ivory;" together with some Wella brand 'Kolestral' hair conditioning cream; the two tubes still in their original box (though box is now somewhat damaged due to age). Various Sizes Sold for $3,900 inclusive of Buyer's Premium"

An advertisement for Wella Kolestral Creme from 1950, http://books.google.ca/books?id=-kwE...pag...p;q&f=false.

I used Wella Kolestral Creme years ago. I never thought it was all that special.

Wella is now owned by Proctor and Gamble (P&G).

No miracle hair conditioning products exist today to undo any hair damage, especially the damage to hair caused by double chemical processing. However, damage to hair from conventional peroxide can be minimized by both coconut and argan oils, when they are used as a pre-treatment before conventional dying or lightening, based on reports in the "peroxide thread", http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/...ad.php?t=10495, even when hair is bleached (conventional peroxide is used in bleach). The oils may also help minimize perm damage. That at present is unknown, (perm neutralizer often contains hydrogen peroxide).

Based on coconut oil research, http://journal.scconline.org/pdf/cc2...175-p00192.pdf, coconut oil can help prevent protein loss and condition hair used as a pre-wash and it is absorbed into the hair during shampooing. Coconut oil has been reported to condition hair here in this thread, http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/...ad.php?t=57025, used in a shampoo, and it was also reported to do so years ago based on quotes by a hair stylist from the past, http://carolelombard.org/now-you-can...s-like-lombard.

Gladys Rasmussen, Marilyn's long time hairdresser :
"There are several problems with doing Marilyn's hair; it's very fine and therefore hard to manage. It gets oily if it isn't shampooed every day and her hair is naturally so curly that to build a coiffure for her I have to first give her a straight permanent. The way we got her shade of platinum is with my own secret blend of Sparkling Silver bleach plus 20 volume peroxide and a secret formula of silver platinum rinse to take the yellow out"

Pearl was a rinses specialist.
According to Simone Signoret in her book, Marilyn was come Pearl every Saturday for bleaching hair.
On the death of Marilyn, she donned Marilyn for the last time with the Misfits wig.
She attended the Marilyn's funeral.

Eva,

Kenneth Battelle claims credit for helping M's hair while it was falling out for from the bleaching process. His salon is in the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York, near where I work.

Check out what he says about Marilyn's hair on his home page for his salon:

You can try to email him...
This should be a secret today 50 years later !!!
On its website, it is mentionned : "her hair that is falling out from overbleaching and perming"
And if you come into contact with him, ask him : is it the legend of Marilyn's hair was very damaged, she lost them and wore wigs because the last time he was capped for the sessions by Bert Stern in June 1962.

It wasn't Pearl Porterfield who did Marilyn's hair for her funeral, it was Agnes Flanagan.

Sydney Guilaroff fainted when he saw Marilyn dead. So Agnès Flanagan AND Pearl Porterfield have decided to put a wig because her hair had been damaged by the autopsy. The two hairdresser was in and Pearl Porterfield was a wig specialist.

Yes, Kenneth is still alive! Email him! We who aren't hair stylists can't because I wouldn't know what to discuss. I'd like to go to the salon but I know it would be too much out of my budget.

Kenneth saved M's hair from falling out - some restorative process.

If you email Kenneth let us know how you get on Eva! Though I suspect a letter would be better than email. Written letters sent in the post tend to get a better response.

It's a great idea Eva to write to Kenneth!
He knew Marilyn in 1955 and until 1962.
You'll ask him his recipe for bleaching hair, and ask him how he liked his hair at the end of his life and precisely at the Bert Stern'session. Ask him too also if he had headed for the JFK's Birthday and if his hairstyle had been changed by the Mickey SONG's comb, so we shall know if Mickey SONG had said the true.
Thank you and good luck!
(If you are not good in English like me, ask an other ES members english to correct you)
