(Post all the LIFE Pics here and anything else about the movie.) (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/throb.gif)
(1948) Sitting Pretty - Marilyn Monroe and Clifton Webb in Original LIFE Magazine Photo publicizing the 1948 film Sitting Pretty, first in the hilarious "Mr. Belvedere" series. Though not credited in this film, one photo in this lot of ten images by Loomis Dean for a Life Magazine spread, pictures the curvaceous future superstar. She is seen sitting on the floor, eating a chocolate, next to Webb as Lynn Belvedere, babysitter of the three troublesome children of Robert Young and Maureen O'Hara. Monroe was under contract to Fox, the producer of this film, from August 1946 until August 1947. We theorize that she was possibly on the set the day LIFE came to do the photo story and posed for a picture. This group of ten photos range in size from 10" x 11" to 10.5" x 13" and show Webb in various scenes with the three young children under his care. All are back-stamped "Not for Publication Except by Permission Time Inc" and "Life Photo by Loomis Dean" on the verso. This Monroe photo is possibly unpublished. According to this page production dates of the movie were between October and December 1947, Marilyn wasn't even signed to Fox then. The other girl in those pictures is Laurette Luez, she wasn't in this film either. I think they just had different ways of promoting films in those days... put a cute girl in the PR pictures and people will go see it... Dunno. Ya maybe these photos were shot before actual movie production began in October. When MM was at the end of her contract (she was dropped in September). They 1st did alot of promoting for the upcoming to be film. Like you said, pretty girls help get the press swirling and talk about the upcoming movie in news print or magazines (as these were LIFE photos taken of MM). Anything for publicity. ![]() It seems Laurette claims she gave MM her name ! http://www.legendarywomen.com/truth.shtml One day when Laurette Met Norma Jean at 20th Century Fox acting class she noticed that Norma was very depressed. When Laurette asked "Why are you so sad Norma Jean?" Norma replied "I wanted to take the professional name of Jean Nelson but they wouldn't let me because they already have a young man that they are grooming for stardom by the name of Gene Nelson." at which point Laurette said that she had a theory regarding professional names, and that theory involved finding a name that had already been famous and putting it with another which would distract from the original persona of the famous person of the past. For instance, take a list of the Presidents of the United States. Now what can you think of that would be more famous than the Monroe Doctrine. There had been a very successful music star of the Broadway stage in the generation before Laurette and Marilyn. This star was known as Marilyn Miller. She was a very beautiful blond actress. Laurette suggested Marilyn because she liked Marilyn Miller. At this point Norma Jean said,"Oh I love it, yes that's who I am I'm Marilyn Monroe." Sometime after Laurette found a beautiful name for Norma Jean. Marilyn confided to Laurette that she was in a quandary because photographers were always demanding of her "Look Sexy" for the camera and asked Laurette how do you look sexy? Laurette explained to her that only thru the rules of physical attributes of the body and face that she had acquired thru the study of acting that she could create the image of how to create a sexy image. Since age 12 Laurette had been the protegee of Marie Stoddard who was the best acting coach in Hollywood at the time. Speaking of professional names incidentally, Marie had been born Mary Anna Pinkerton which unquestionably could not be associated with the acting profession being that she was the daughter of the famous founder of the Pinkerton Detective Agency. Marie had appeared on Broadway with such actors as John Gielgud and John Barrymore. It was only through this training that Laurette was able to teach Marilyn how to look sexy and also to dress the part. For instance, if you are wearing a low cut cocktail dress in the afternoon just tell them that you are on your way to the a cocktail party and don't have time to change. And don't forget to wear you high ankle strap shoes." Actually Laurette Luez was the mentor for Marilyn Monroe on the art of how to look sexy! |

Thanks for the pictures, they are brilliant! I love these playful pics. It looks like she was having fun. I know that she loved posing for stills rather than being filmed. Is that true? Just checking. (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

QUOTE When Webb was making Sitting Pretty, Monroe visited the set. Life magazine photographer Loomis Dean was there and photographer her sitting on the floor, eating a chocolate next to Webb. This was in 1948 before Monroe was a household name. Monroe at this time was under contract to Fox and probably just dropped by for a chat with Webb. When Life published the story of Sitting Pretty, the Monroe photo was nowhere to be found. She apparently was not important enough at that time to warrant a photo in Life.
