I have a very small Marilyn book collection compared with the rest of you, but I love my Marlilyn books, esp the photo books.

What do you mean by word small ? I think you have an awesome collection ! I have read some 20-25 books on Marilyn, mostly borrowed the books from library; I own less than 10 (few stolen (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/furious.gif) ) - - And you seem to have the most important books IMO.

I think it doesn't really matter how many books you have (unless of course your aim is to get each and every book ever published about her). What matters more is WHAT you have. A couple of good books is the way to go rather than having dozens of sleazy ones (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/wink3.gif)

Yep, I agree with Sirkku, a couple of good books can give one a much better view on MM, than hunderds of bad ones (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/thumbup1.gif) ! Aldo I'm also one of those 'weird' people who wants to have every book ever published on MM, lol (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

I became an MM fan in the 80s too, it was around the time Goddess (Anthony Summers) came out, so there was a lot of interest in Marilyn (and the Kennedys.) But with no internet, I didn't know any other fans - and couldn't afford to buy much. Mainly I collected postcards and owned about five books and records, the rest was borrowed from the library. I didn't have TV either so depended on friends to record films for me. They thought I was a little nuts I'm sure. It was only when I began working on The Mmm Girl that I started collecting again really. Still my discovery of Marilyn in the 80s was a lovely time. The difficulty in accessing stuff meant that whatever I found meant the world to me.
oh I can really relate to that (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

I'm finishing up the Taraborelli one...For those who have read them, which one is better, the Leaming one or the Anthony Summers one? Or Susan Strasberg's? I am hesitant about the Summers one because the autopsy photo disturbs me so much.

Of those books I like Susan Strasberg's best, that's a good read though it's really a memoir of her friendship with Marilyn and not a formal MM biography like the others. On a similar track, have you read Norman Rosten and Berniece Miracle's books? I like these kind of small-scale books by people who knew Marilyn well, so long as they're not too sensationalised, and these are among the better ones.

I haven't read those but have been meaning to get them. I know they're out of print, is Abe Books the best site? I want ones in decent condition because I like to keep my books, esp the Marilyn ones (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/marilynbybrandon_190.gif)

I have never used Abe Books but I've heard good things about it (IMG:http://www.everlasting-star.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/smile1.gif) I usually buy from Amazon Marketplace, and I've been happy every time. The prices and book conditions really vary there but if you read the description (and choose a reliable seller) you get a pretty good idea of what you're buying.

Wow! - I haven't as many books myself which I've listed below, but I have also borrowed many other books to read about MM. I've also researched her life online, documentaries and remembrances, and of course watched most of her films. I am fascinated with her. I think she was a person who, despite all her traumas, physical and mental difficulties, always tried to be better and left a legacy of her story which highlights the injustices that can be perpetrated against women and children. She also had a social conscience: was for the under-dog - for instance promising to attend a night-club every night if they employed the black jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald. I'm very fond of our Mazza as James Haspiel called her (IMG:http://d2eae8pjw8pj4b.cloudfront.net/boards/style_emoticons/default/marilynbybrandon_190.gif)
