Some Like It Hot screening again in February 2009, London:

Thu 12 Feb 14:30 NFT2
Sat 14 Feb 20:30 NFT1

http://www.bfi.org.uk/whatson/some_like_it_hot_2

Timeless comedy featuring the wondrous Curtis-Lemmon double act as struggling musicians taking refuge from the mob in an all-girl band and falling hard for lead vocalist Marilyn Monroe, here in her prime.

Wilder and IAL Diamond's dazzling script revisits the Roaring 20s, with jazzers Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon witnessing the St Valentine's Day Massacre and, by way of escape, taking to drag as members of an all-girl band playing a Miami full of millionaires. Understandably, meeting chanteuse Marilyn Monroe heightens tensions between the pair, ensuring - hilariously - that the road to true love is never as perfectly smooth as it might be.

Directed by:Billy WilderCast:Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Marilyn Monroe, Joe E Brown, George RaftCountry:USAYear:1959Running time:121minCertificate:U

Thanks for the link, Fav. Browsing through the BFI listings for the next two months or so, I see they're showing some outstanding old movies. I so wish I lived nearer! Spellbound, Breakfast at Tiffanys, Notorious, Golden Boy, It's a Wonderful Life, The Clock, Casablanca. Fancy having the opportunity to see all those films (plus SLIH and more recent hits like Se7en and Fight Club) on the big screen, all within eight weeks. You lucky Londoners!

You're welcome Bobby. But I'm not in London so it isn't that easy for me to get there to see any pictures on the big screen. It has to be a special occasion at an appropriate day or time, but is worth it when I do. I saw White Christmas on the big screen there this Christmas. It was wonderful and it is amazing how many things you pick up on that you have never noticed before watching at home on DVD.

Thanks for posting this. I will definitely be seeing SLIH when it is played. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/runninwild.gif)

Oh, it's showing on Valentine's Day too. Any other date-less people want to make a jokey date of it?!!

NIAGARA screening at National Film Theatre, London

Thu 5 Mar 18:00 NFT1
Sat 7 Mar 20:40 NFT2

Honeymooning by Niagara Falls, the Cutlers meet Rose and George Loomis, whose marriage has turned George into a jealous wreck, prone to violent outbursts.
Honeymooning by Niagara Falls, the Cutlers (Showalter and Peters) meet Rose and George Loomis (Monroe and Cotton) whose holiday is anything but romantic. His marriage to Rose has turned George into a jealous wreck, prone to violent outbursts. The destructive force of his passion and her intensely sexual charisma are perfectly matched by the powerful waterfalls and the menacing concrete clock tower

(they're on the big screens)

The Prince and the Showgirl

14 May 20:30 NFT3
31 May 15:30 NFT1

Set during the coronation of George V in 1911, with Olivier as a visiting Carpathian prince looking for fun who gets more than he bargained for from an effervescent Marilyn (as infuriating during the shoot as she is seductive on-screen), this witty Terence Rattigan comedy had many happy memories for Cardiff. Not least was setting up a convincing Westminster Abbey ceremony, after he had filmed the real thing in 1936. Plus River Thames – Yesterday (Hans M Neiter, 1939, 10min).

This is screening at the BFI in London as part of their Jack Cardiff season. Tickets for adults are £9.00

I managed to get to this screening of TPATS. Let me tell you, if you ever get a chance to see it on the big screen grab it with both hands! Laurence Olivier came over much better on the large screen than on the small. His role was much more engaging.

What amazed me was the laughs the movie got from the audience. I thought we'd be the only ones there but it was pretty busy. There were even claps of delight from people at times and the bit where Marilyn backs out of the room and says 'pretty good huh' got whoops of delight with someone behind me saying 'she is just delightful'.

I was not prepared for the audience reaction. It made the screening, an 'event'. Must see as a shared experience if you ever get the chance at a public screening. I was also delighted to see a mix in the audience from a young mum bringing her children to watch, to old aged pensioners who most likely saw it the first time round. Great!
